Models and computational methods for dynamic friction phenomena

: This work addresses the general problems of formulating continuum models of a large class of dynamic frictional phenomena and of developing computation methods for analyzing these phenomena. Of particular interest are theories which can adequately predict stick slip motion, frictional damping in structural dynamics, and sliding resistance. This work id divided into three principal parts. In Part I, a large body of experimental and theoretical literature on friction is critically reviewed and interpreted as a basis for models of dynamic friction phenomena. In part II, continuum models of interfaces are developed which simulate key interface properties identified in Part I. Variational principles for a class of dynamic friction problems are also established. In Part III, finite element models and numerical algorithms for analyzing dynamic friction are presented. Also, a dynamic stability analysis is presented in which it is established that stick slip motion can be associated with dynamic instability of the governing nonlinear system for certain ranges of slip velocity and coefficient of friction. Numerical results suggest that the new models derived here can satisfactorily depict a large and important class of dynamic friction effects. The reach of tribology has expanded in diverse fields and tribology related research activities have seen immense growth during the last decade. This review takes stock of the recent advances in research pertaining to different aspects of tribology within the last 2 to 3 years. Different aspects of tribology that have been reviewed including lubrication, wear and surface engineering, biotribology, high temperature tribology, and computational tribology. This review attempts to highlight recent research and also presents future outlook pertaining to these aspects. It may however be noted that there are limitations of this review. One of the most important of these is that tribology being a highly multidisciplinary field, the research results are widely spread across various disciplines and there can be omissions because of this. Secondly, the topics dealt with in the field of tribology include only some of the salient topics (such as lubrication, wear, surface engineering, biotribology, high temperature tribology, and computational tribology) but there are many more aspects of tribology that have not been covered in this review. Despite these limitations it is hoped that such a review will bring the most recent salient research in focus and will be beneficial for the growing community of tribology researchers.

An analytical model is developed for the assessment of the steady-state temperature distribution in a wheel undergoing heating in friction contact with the rail and the brake shoes as well as nonuniform cooling in its periphery. The model takes into account the heat conduction due to rolling contact at the wheel/rail and the sliding contact at the wheel/brake shoe interfaces as well as heat loss by convection from the sides and periphery of the wheel and the brake shoes. The heat partitioning coefficients in the rail and the brake shoe contacts with the wheel are incorporated in the model. These heat-partitioning coefficients can be used to evaluate the temperature field in the wheel and the brake shoes. It is shown that the wheel contact temperature is confined to a very thin depth within the surface layer (approximately 6% in the radial direction), but the rest of the wheel is at the bulk temperature. Analysis of Heat Partitioning in Wheel/Rail and Wheel/Brake Shoe Friction Contact: An Analytical Approach

Human skin is a soft biomaterial with a complex anatomical structure and it has a complex material behavior during the mechanical contact with objects and surfaces. The friction adhesion component is defined by means of the theories of Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR), Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov (DMT) and Maugis – Dugdale (MD). We shall consider the human skin entering into contact with a rigid surface. The deformation (hysteresis) component of the skin friction is evaluated with Voigt rheological model for the spherical contact, with the original model, developed in MATHCAD software. The adhesive component of the skin friction is greater than the hysteresis component for all friction parameters (load, velocity, the strength of interface between skin and the artificial material).
