We present a 1 /spl times/ 2 all-optical packet switch. All the processing of the header information is carried out in the optical domain. The optical headers are recognized by employing the two-pulse correlation principle in a semiconductor laser amplifier in loop optical mirror (SLALOM) configuration. The processed header information is stored in an optical flip-flop memory that is based on a symmetric configuration of two coupled lasers. The optical flip-flop memory drives a wavelength routing switch that is based on cross-gain modulation in a semiconductor optical amplifier. We also present an alternative optical packet routing concept that can be used for all-optical buffering of data packets. In this case, an optical threshold function that is based on a asymmetric configuration of two coupled lasers is used to drive a wavelength routing switch. Experimental results are presented for both the 1 /spl times/ 2 optical packet switch and the optical buffer switch.

Optical packet switching and buffering by using all-optical signal processing methods

The research on optical packet switching (OPS) has witnessed considerable progress in the 1990s. We examine the future potential of OPS in the core network by discussing this switching approach and the current status of a number of its enabling technologies. Many of these technologies are still in the stage of research and experimentation. We see that optical packet switching may be deployed in the long-term future subject to satisfaction of three main conditions/developments. First, additional technological developments have to take place to overcome remaining implementation challenges while making OPS cost-effective to deploy. Second, a rational migration scenario of the network toward gradual deployment of packet-based optical switching approaches should exist. Finally, carriers have to become more interested in packet-based optical switching solutions.

Optical flip-flops formed from two coupled Mach–Zehnder interferometers are presented. The interferometers employ semiconductor optical amplifiers in their arms. The flip-flops are demonstrated via simulations and experiments. Low switching energy and very high speed are possible in spite of the relatively slow semiconductor optical amplifier carrier recovery time. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Fast optical flip‐flop by use of Mach–Zehnder interferometers

In this paper, we review recent advances in ultrafast optical time-domain technology with emphasis on the use in optical packet switching. In this respect, several key building blocks, including high-rate laser sources applicable to any time-division-multiplexing (TDM) application, optical logic circuits for bitwise processing, and clock-recovery circuits for timing synchronization with both synchronous and asynchronous data traffic, are described in detail. The circuits take advantage of the ultrafast nonlinear transfer function of semiconductor-based devices to operate successfully at rates beyond 10 Gb/s. We also demonstrate two more complex circuits-a header extraction unit and an exchange-bypass switch-operating at 10 Gb/s. These two units are key blocks for any general-purpose packet routing/switching application. Finally, we discuss the system perspective of all these modules and propose their possible incorporation in a packet switch architecture to provide low-level but high-speed functionalities. The goal is to perform as many operations as possible in the optical domain to increase node throughput and to alleviate the network from unwanted and expensive optical-electrical-optical conversions.

An all-optical serial header processor is demonstrated using a semiconductor laser amplifier in a loop mirror configuration (SLALOM). The operation of the header processor is discussed and it is experimentally demonstrated with a 10 Gbit/s Manchester encoded (information rate of 5 Gbit/s) packet stream. The operation of the header processor is based on the correlation function of the SLALOM. The header processor can be utilised in devising all-optical packet switches.
