A 30-year Memorial Hospital experience with 146 patients with malignant mixed tumor is reviewed. These comprised 5% of 2,743 patients who were treated for salivary neoplasms from 1939 through 1968. The tumors arose in the parotid gland in 108 patients, submaxillary gland in 23 patients, mucus or so-called minor salivary glands in 16 patients, and sublingual gland in one. In terms of our total experience, 11% of all submaxillary tumors proved to be of the malignant mixed variety as compared to 6% of parotid tumors and 3% of minor salivary tumors, respectively. Seventy-one patients (48%) had previously received therapy elsewhere. Results of treatment are presented and the factors which influenced the results are discussed.

Herbicides use is increasing throughout the globe due to increasing labour cost, choice of application of herbicides, quick weed control in crop and non-crop areas. In India, herbicide use has increased up to 30% during the last 10 years in the country. Herbicides are chemical in nature, therefore, excessive and repeated use may pose residue problems, phytotoxicity to crop plants, residual effects on susceptible intercrops or succeeding crops, adverse effects on non-target organisms and ultimately health hazards to human and animals. Many herbicides are found as bound residues which make them not only unavailable to the targets but also polluting the soil ecosystem in a number of ways. Thus monitoring of these residues in soil, water, plants, fishes and other matrixes is very much important. The fate of herbicide in soil depends on adsorption, absorption, volatilization, leaching, runoff, photodecomposition, degradation by microbial and chemical processes etc. In Indian tropical conditions, the half-life of imadazoline, phynylureas, sulfonylureas, triazines, chloroacetinalides, dinitroanilines, diethyl ethers, thiocarbamates, and fop group of herbicides in soil are found to varied 57–71, 13–60, 13–147, 12–58, 5–60, 12–77, 19–29, 19–24, and 8–24 days. At harvest, herbicides in various commodities were found either below the maximum residue limit or below detectable limits. Indirect effects of herbicides are not common in India. However increasing incidences of intentionally acute pisioning by some of the herbicide such as butachlor, fluchloralin, paraquat, 2,4-D, pendimethalin, glyphosate etc. are emerging problem in India. Paraquat poisoning is an uncommon entity in India, and is associated with a high mortality rate. It can be concluded that in India herbicide contamination of soil, plants and natural waters occurs infrequently and at low levels.

Herbicides residues in soil, water, plants and non-targeted organisms and human health implications: an Indian perspective

A field experiment was conducted in an Alfisol to study the degradation of butachlor and its residues in paddy grain during Rabi and Kharif seasons of 2007–08 at College Farm, College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar. Butachlor dissipated with half life varying from 12.5 to 21.5 days when applied at the rate of 1.0 and 2.0 kg/ha under with and without organic manures conditions. The observed half life values were lower for lower dose of applied herbicide as compared to higher dose and the field half life of butachlor was more under without organic manures as compared to organic manures applied plots. Residues of butachlor in field soil were analysed by using gas chromatograph and 100% dissipation of butachlor was observed at the time of harvest of crop. Very low levels of residues were detected in rice grain below the maximum residue limit of 0.5 mg/kg. Therefore, application of butachlor in paddy for weed management can be considered safe from the point of consumption of grain.

The present investigation was carried out at changes in enzyme activities during composting which offers a promising solution for assessment of quality of compost. The results revealed that, in both the composting methods the enzyme activity decreased with increasing the composting period. However per cent decrease from initial to a particular period of time was more in vermicomposting than conventional composting and maximum activity was recorded in vermicomposting than conventional composting. The dehydrogenase activity was 79 and 44 mg TPF produced g-1hr-1 at 30 and 60 days of vermicomposting, where as in conventional composting at 30 and 110 days it was 36 to 29 mg TPF produced g-1hr-1. The acid and alkaline phosphatase activity (mg PNP released g-1hr-1) did not significantly changes with incubation in both the composting methods. However more phosphatase activity was recorded in vermicomposting than conventional composting and it was 48 and 26 % increase of acid and alkaline phosphatase activity in vermicomposting than conventional composting. The present study revealed that the vermicomposting of vegetable market waste recorded higher enzyme activities than conventional method of composting and low enzyme activity at maturity compared to initial stages of composting.

Persistence of pendimethalin and oxyfluorfen in an alfisol and vertisol was studied at three moisture levels (at saturation, Field Capacity and 50% Field Capacity) and at two temperature levels (10 ± 2° C and 27+ 2° C) for 137 days in the laboratory. Degradation of pendimethalin and oxyfluorfen was more rapid at high temperature and moisture levels. The disappearance curve/semi logarithmic plot followed first order kinetics with two distinct pathways, an initial faster rate followed by a slower and more gradual disappearance. Half life values for pendimethalin varied from 35.45 to 108.28 in alfisol and from 28.28 to 91.84 in vertisol; for oxyfluorfen half life values varied from 97.60 to 192.50 in Alfisols and 90.05 to 147.44 in vertisols.
