The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) project aims to accelerate and collide electrons and positrons up to 3 TeV center-of-mass energy using a novel two-beam acceleration concept. To prove the feasibility of this technology the CLIC Test Facility CTF3 has been operated during the last years. CALIFES (Concept d’Accelerateur Lineaire pour Faisceau d’Electron Sonde) is an electron linac hosted in the CTF3 complex, which provides a flexible electron beam and the necessary equipment to probe both the two-beam acceleration concept and novel instrumentation to be used in the future CLIC collider. In this paper we describe the CALIFES Linac and its beam characteristics, present recent test results, outline its future program on two-beam module testing and finally discuss about possible future applications as a multi-purpose accelerator technology test facility.

CALIFES: A Multi-Purpose Electron Beam for Accelerator Technology Tests

The CLIC/CTF3 collaboration is studying the feasibility of a multi-TeV electron-positron collider, the so-called CLIC: Compact LInear Collider. The idea is to use a two-beam acceleration scheme at an RF frequency around 12 GHz. In this scheme, the RF power to accelerate the main beam is produced by a high current drive beam. To demonstrate the feasibility of this scheme, the CTF3 facility (CLIC Test Facility 3) has been constructed at CERN. Recently, the complex to generate the drive beam has been successfully commissioned producing a beam with a current 28 A. This beam is now being used to test the power production and main beam acceleration according to the two-beam scheme. The results of the test facility provide vital input for the CLIC conceptual design report that is presently being prepared.

The CLIC feasibility demonstration in CTF3

The CLIC project, currently under study at CERN is an electron-positron collider at 3 TeV centre-of-mass energy and luminosity of 2*10 cms. Achieving such luminosity requires a beam dimension of 1 nm in the vertical plane and high beam stability. The TD24 is a traveling wave structure operating at 12 GHz designed to reach 100 MV/m at constant gradient. It consists of two coupling cells and 24 disks. The RF is coupled from cell to cell though an iris of 5.5 mm. To minimize the occurrence of wake-fields and minimize the emittance growth Δεy below 5%, the pre-alignment precision of the electrical centre of the accelerating structure (AS) on its support has to be better than 7 μm. Following, the AS is actively aligned with beam using the wakefield monitor (WFM) signals, with a resolution of 3.5 μm. A test bench for laboratory measurements has been designed and exploits the asymmetry created by RF scattering parameters by an off-centre conductive wire, stretched to locate the electromagnetic centre of the AS. Simulations and preliminary measurement results are presented.

CLIC Feasibility Demonstration at CTF3

From mid-2012, the Two Beam Test Stand (TBTS) in the CTF3 Experimental Facility is hosting 2 high gradient accelerating structures powered by a single power extraction and transfer structure in a scheme very close to the CLIC basic cell. We report here about the results obtained with this configuration as: energy gain and energy spread in relation with RF phases and power, octupolar transverse beam effects compared with modelling predictions, breakdown rate and breakdown locations within the structures. These structures are the first to be fitted with Wake Field Monitors (WFM) that have been extensively tested and used to further improve the structures alignment on the beam line. These results show the unique capabilities of this test stand to conduct experiments with real beams.

Recent Results from CTF3 Two Beam Test Stand

To achieve high luminosity in CLIC, the accelerating structures must be aligned to an accuracy of 5 µm with respect to the beam trajectory. Position detectors called Wakefield Monitors (WFM) are integrated to the structure for a beam based alignment. This paper describes the requirements of such monitors. Detailed RF design and electromagnetic simulations of the WFM itself are presented. In particular, time domain computations are performed and an evaluation of the resolution is done for two higher order modes at 18 and 24 GHz. The mechanical design of a prototype accelerating structure with WFM is also presented as well as the fabrication status of three complete structures. The objective is to implement two of them in CTF3 at CERN for a feasibility demonstration with beam and high power rf.
