Quality of service (QoS) support in Web services plays a great role for the success of this emerging technology. In this paper, we present a QoS broker-based architecture for Web services. The main goal of the architecture is to support the client in selecting Web services based on his/her required QoS. To achieve this goal, we propose a two-phase verification technique that is performed by a third party broker. The first phase consists of syntactic and semantic verification of the service interface description including the QoS parameters description. The second phase consists of applying a measurement technique to compute the QoS metrics stated in the service interface and compares their values with the claimed one. This is used to verify the conformity of a Web service from the QoS point of view (QoS testing). A methodological approach to generate QoS test cases, as input to QoS verification is used. We have implemented a prototype that includes the verification and certification components of the broker. We performed experiments to evaluate the importance of verification and certification features in the selection process using real Web services.

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is gaining momentum as an emerging distributed system architecture for business-to-business collaborations. This momentum can be observed in both industry and academic research. SOA presents new challenges and opportunities for testing and verification, leading to an upsurge in research. This paper surveys the previous work undertaken on testing and verification of service-centric systems, which in total are 177 papers, showing the strengths and weaknesses of current strategies and testing tools and identifying issues for future work. Testing and verification in service-oriented architecture: a survey

Web services form a new distributed computing paradigm. Collaborative verification and validation are important when Web services from different vendors are integrated together to carry out a coherent task. This paper presents a new approach to verify Web services by model checking the process model of OWL-S (Web ontology language for Web services) and to validate them by the test cases automatically generated in the model checking process. We extend the BLAST, a model checker that handles control flow model naturally, to handle the concurrency in OWL-S. We also propose enhancement in OWL-S and PDDL (Planning Domain Definition Language) to facilitate the automated test case generation. Experiments on realistic examples are provided to illustrate the process.

Automated model checking and testing for composite Web services

Cloud platform provides an infrastructure for resource sharing, software hosting and service delivering in a pay-per-use approach. To test the cloud-based software systems, techniques and tools are necessary to address unique quality concerns of the cloud infrastructure such as massive scalability and dynamic configuration. The tools can also be built on the cloud platform to benefit from virtualized platform and services, massive resources, and parallelized execution. The paper makes a survey of representative approaches and typical tools for cloud testing. It identifies the needs for cloud testing tools including multi-layer testing, SLA-based testing, large scale simulation, and on-demand test environment. To address the needs, it investigates the new architecture and techniques for designing testing tools for the cloud and in the cloud. Tool implementations are surveyed considering different approaches including migrated conventional tools, research tools, commercial tools and facilities like benchmark and testbed. Based on the analysis of state-of-the-art practices, the paper further investigates future trend of testing tool research and development from both capability and usability perspectives.

Cloud testing tools

The UDDI (Universal Description Discovery and Integration) provides classification to find the distributed Web services (WS) by keyword matching. The UDDI version 3 allows searching WS using digital signatures. However, it still needs systematic verification to ensure WS quality in a timely fashion. This paper proposes adding verification mechanism to the UDDI servers including check-in and checkout of WS. The key idea is that test scripts should be attached to WS, and both WS providers and clients use these test scripts. Before accepting a new WS into the service directory. The associated test scripts must test the new WS, and they will be accepted only if the test was successful. Before using a specific WS, a client can use the appropriate test scripts to test the WS and it will be used only if the test was successful. While the code for WS may not be available, but the associated test scripts test script specification techniques and distributed test execution techniques to perform testing with a UDDI server.

Verification of Web services using an enhanced UDDI server

To reduce testing cost and effort, the paper proposes a systematic approach to generate test cases for state-based embedded systems. This process first derives a state/event tree based on a scenario specification, with a node of the tree representing a state, and a link a transition between two states. Once the tree is obtained, it is possible to generate test inputs based on partition testing, random testing and boundary value testing. It is also possible to perform various analyses such as completeness and consistency analysis, dependency analysis and relationship analysis. An XML-based tool has been developed to automate many of the steps in the process. Whenever there is a change to the system, the tester needs to modify the state/event tree, and the tool automatically re-generates the new test cases to test those changed parts as well as perform selective regression testing to test those affected parts. To illustrate the ideas, the paper uses a wireless mobile phone system as an example. The system consists of three parts: a mobile station center server, several base station servers, and clients.

Scenario-based test case generation for state-based embedded systems

Testing is difficult and expensive, and testing distributed system even more difficult due to issues such as interoperability, collaboration, synchronization, timing, and concurrency. A tester often needs to spend significant time in developing lengthy testing code to ensure that the System Under Test (SUT) is reasonably well tested. This paper proposes an Object-Oriented (OO) framework to test distributed system rapidly and adaptively by using scenario modeling, state modeling, verification patterns, design patterns, regression testing, ripple effect analysis, simulation, automated test execution, and remote testing using TCP/IP or SOAP. Finally, this paper uses a supply-chain example to illustrate the key concepts.
