A two-body $^{15}\mathrm{O}+^{2}\mathrm{He}$ cluster model is applied to continuum discretized coupled channel (CDCC) calculations for the 136-MeV $^{17}\mathrm{Ne}+^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ system. With $^{15}\mathrm{O}+^{2}\mathrm{He}$ binding potential parameters tuned so that either of the two $B(E2;1/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ values for $^{17}\mathrm{Ne}$ available in the literature are reproduced, the calculations provide a reasonable description of the elastic scattering data. A comparison of the predicted breakup angular distributions with the measured inclusive $^{15}\mathrm{O}$ production cross section supports the conclusion of previous coupled channel calculations that the larger of the two $B(E2;1/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ values may be excluded since the calculation based on it significantly over predicts the forward angle data. Further calculations find that the 1.908-MeV $1/{2}^{+}$ resonance of $^{17}\mathrm{Ne}$ cannot be simultaneously described with the 1.288-MeV $3/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and 1.764-MeV $5/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ resonances by an internally consistent calculation within the two-body model. Arguments based on $Q$-value matching considerations that a large peak in the measured inclusive $^{15}\mathrm{O}$ cross section centered at ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{lab}.}={55}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ which the CDCC calculations fail to describe is due to $1p$ stripping to the giant quadrupole resonance in $^{209}\mathrm{Bi}$ are supported by distorted wave Born approximation calculations, providing a novel illustration of $Q$-value matching in action.

We investigated the elastic scattering, inelastic scattering, breakup reaction, and total fusion reactions of 17Ne + 208Pb system using the optical model (OM) and a coupled channel (CC) approaches. The aim of this study is to elucidate the suppress of the elastic cross-section that is invisible in proton-rich nuclei such as 8B and 17F projectiles but appears in neutron-rich nuclei such as 11Li and 11Be projectiles. The results revealed that this suppression was caused mainly by the nuclear interaction between the projectile and target nucleus rather than the strong Coulomb interaction observed in neutron-rich nuclei and the contributions of Coulomb excitation interaction due to two low-lying E2 resonance states are relatively small. From the simultaneous chi-square analysis of the 17Ne + 208Pb system, we can infer a strong suppression effect in the elastic scattering cross-section due to the nuclear interaction between the projectile and target nucleus, rather than the Coulomb interaction as observed in neutron-rich nuclei. Also, the contribution of the direct reaction, comprising the inelastic scattering and breakup reaction cross-sections, accounted for almost half of the total reaction. Finally, we perform the CC calculation using the parameters obtained from our OM calculation but our CC calculations could not explain the 15O production cross section.

Abstract The present review studies total reaction cross sections from elastic scattering angular distributions of light stable and exotic projectiles ( $$2 \le Z_P \le 10$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> <mml:mo>≤</mml:mo> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>Z</mml:mi> <mml:mi>P</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>≤</mml:mo> <mml:mn>10</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> , $$4 \le A_P \le 24$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mn>4</mml:mn> <mml:mo>≤</mml:mo> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>A</mml:mi> <mml:mi>P</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>≤</mml:mo> <mml:mn>24</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> ) on 208 Pb at energies around the Coulomb barrier. From the overall about 200 data it is found that the widely accepted simple grouping of the derived reduced cross sections into three categories—tightly bound, weakly bound, and exotic halo projectiles—is too simplistic and does not fully reflect the range of the experimental data. Furthermore, the energy dependence of the reduced cross sections shows unexpected properties which were hitherto only sparsely considered.
