Because of the interesting and multifunctional properties, recently, ZnO nanostructures are considered as excellent material for fabrication of highly sensitive and selective gas sensors. Thus, ZnO nanomaterials are widely used to fabricate efficient gas sensors for the detection of various hazardous and toxic gases. The presented review article is focusing on the recent developments of NO2 gas sensors based on ZnO nanomaterials. The review presents the general introduction of some metal oxide nanomaterials for gas sensing application and finally focusing on the structure of ZnO and its gas sensing mechanisms. Basic gas sensing characteristics such as gas response, response time, recovery time, selectivity, detection limit, stability and recyclability, etc are also discussed in this article. Further, the utilization of various ZnO nanomaterials such as nanorods, nanowires, nano-micro flowers, quantum dots, thin films and nanosheets, etc for the fabrication of NO2 gas sensors are also presented. Moreover, various factors such as NO2 concentrations, annealing temperature, ZnO morphologies and particle sizes, relative humidity, operating temperatures which are affecting the NO2 gas sensing properties are discussed in this review. Finally, the review article is concluded and future directions are presented.

Zinc Oxide Nanostructures for NO2 Gas–Sensor Applications: A Review

Stratum corneum is the main obstacle for drugs to pass through the skin. Microneedles are composed of arrays of micro-projections formed with different materials, generally ranging from 25–2000 μm in height. Microneedles straightly pierce the skin with its short needle arrays to overcome this barrier. Microneedles can be divided into several categories, for instance, solid microneedles, coated microneedles, and hollow microneedles and so on. However, all these types have their weak points related to corresponding mechanisms. In recent years, pioneering scientists have been working on these issues and some possible solutions have been investigated. This article will focus on the microneedle arrays consisting of hydrogels. Hydrogels are commonly used in drug delivery field. Hydrogel microneedles can be further divided into dissolving and degradable microneedles and phase transition microneedles. The former leaves drug with matrix in the skin. The latter has the feature that drugs in the matrix are delivered while the remaining ingredients can be easily removed from the skin after usage. For drugs which are required to be used every day, the phase transition microneedles are more acceptable. This article is written in order to summarize the advantages of these designs and summarize issues to be solved which may hinder the development of this technology.

Hydrogel Microneedle Arrays for Transdermal Drug Delivery

By mimicking naturally occurring superhydrophobic surfaces, scientists can now realize artificial surfaces on which droplets of a few microliters of water are forced to assume an almost spherical shape and an extremely high contact angle. In recent decades, these surfaces have attracted much attention due to their technological applications for anti-wetting and self-cleaning materials. Very recently, researchers have shifted their interest to investigate whether superhydrophobic surfaces can be exploited to study biological systems. This research effort has stimulated the design and realization of new devices that allow us to actively organize, visualize and manipulate matter at both the microscale and nanoscale levels. Such precise control opens up wide applications in biomedicine, as it allows us to directly manipulate objects at the typical length scale of cells and macromolecules. This progress report focuses on recent biological and medical applications of superhydrophobicity. Particular regard is paid to those applications that involve the detection, manipulation and study of extremely small quantities of molecules, and to those that allow high throughput cell and biomaterial screening.

Recent advances in superhydrophobic surfaces and their relevance to biology and medicine

Polyinosinic–polycytidylic acid (poly(I:C)) is a synthetic double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) analog able to induce apoptosis in different cancer cells by the activation of toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) and cytosolic helicases, retinoic acid inducible gene I (RIG-I) like receptors. In this work, we have synthesized and thoroughly characterized a core–shell liposome–silica hybrid (LSH) nanoparticle (NP) made of a silica core surrounded by a multicomponent cationic lipid bilayer. In view of in vivo applications, a variant with polyethyleneglycol (PEG) grafted onto the lipid surface was also synthesized. Poly(I:C)-loaded LSH NPs were characterized and optimized in terms of their chemical–physical properties by using dynamic light scattering (DLS), micro-electrophoresis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The ability of this new technology to kill cancer cells was validated in PC3 prostate cancer and MCF7 breast cancer cells by MTT proliferation assay, flow cytometry and fluorescence confocal microscopy. We found that negatively charged poly(I:C)-loaded LSH NPs are more efficient than their liposome counterpart in eliminating cancer cells, thus representing excellent candidates for both in vitro and in vivo drug delivery applications.

Killing cancer cells using nanotechnology: novel poly(I:C) loaded liposome–silica hybrid nanoparticles

The development of coating methods that enable us to combine antagonist properties on a single material is a real challenge. This active research topic can impact, for instance, the textile field to engineer fabrics with liquid-repellent properties on one side and superhydrophilic properties on the opposite side. In this context, we have developed an easy surface functionalization process that provides durable Janus wetting properties to fabrics. On the basis of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), we report a simple and reproducible three-step functionalization method that led to a coating with superhydrophobic and superoleophobic properties on one side of the porous substrate and superhydrophilic properties on the opposite side.
