Breast cancer (BC) is a type of tumor that develops in the breast cells and is one of the most common cancers in women. Women are also at risk from BC, the second most life-threatening disease after lung cancer. The early diagnosis and classification of BC are very important. Furthermore, manual detection is time-consuming, laborious work, and, possibility of pathologist errors, and incorrect classification. To address the above highlighted issues, this paper presents a hybrid deep learning (CNN-GRU) model for the automatic detection of BC-IDC (+,−) using whole slide images (WSIs) of the well-known PCam Kaggle dataset. In this research, the proposed model used different layers of architectures of CNNs and GRU to detect breast IDC (+,−) cancer. The validation tests for quantitative results were carried out using each performance measure (accuracy (Acc), precision (Prec), sensitivity (Sens), specificity (Spec), AUC and F1-Score. The proposed model shows the best performance measures (accuracy 86.21%, precision 85.50%, sensitivity 85.60%, specificity 84.71%, F1-score 88%, while AUC 0.89 which overcomes the pathologist’s error and miss classification problem. Additionally, the efficiency of the proposed hybrid model was tested and compared with CNN-BiLSTM, CNN-LSTM, and current machine learning and deep learning (ML/DL) models, which indicated that the proposed hybrid model is more robust than recent ML/DL approaches.

Intelligent Hybrid Deep Learning Model for Breast Cancer Detection

The field of medical image processing plays a significant role in brain tumor classification. The survival rate of patients can be increased by diagnosing the tumor at an early stage. Several automatic systems have been developed to perform the tumor recognition process. However, the existing systems could be more efficient in identifying the exact tumor region and hidden edge details with minimum computation complexity. The Harris Hawks optimized convolution network (HHOCNN) is used in this work to resolve these issues. The brain magnetic resonance (MR) images are pre-processed, and the noisy pixels are eliminated to minimize the false tumor recognition rate. Then, the candidate region process is applied to identify the tumor region. The candidate region method investigates the boundary regions with the help of the line segments concept, which reduces the loss of hidden edge details. Various features are extracted from the segmented region, which is classified by applying a convolutional neural network (CNN). The CNN computes the exact region of the tumor with fault tolerance. The proposed HHOCNN system was implemented using MATLAB, and performance was evaluated using pixel accuracy, error rate, accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity metrics. The nature-inspired Harris Hawks optimization algorithm minimizes the misclassification error rate and improves the overall tumor recognition accuracy to 98% achieved on the Kaggle dataset.

Abstract Skin cancer continues to remain one of the major healthcare issues across the globe. If diagnosed early, skin cancer can be treated successfully. While early diagnosis is paramount for an effective cure for cancer, the current process requires the involvement of skin cancer specialists, which makes it an expensive procedure and not easily available and affordable in developing countries. This dearth of skin cancer specialists has given rise to the need to develop automated diagnosis systems. In this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based methods have been proposed. These systems can assist in the early detection of skin cancer and can consequently lower its morbidity, and, in turn, alleviate the mortality rate associated with it. Machine learning and deep learning are branches of AI that deal with statistical modeling and inference, which progressively learn from data fed into them to predict desired objectives and characteristics. This survey focuses on Machine Learning and Deep Learning techniques deployed in the field of skin cancer diagnosis, while maintaining a balance between both techniques. A comparison is made to widely used datasets and prevalent review papers, discussing automated skin cancer diagnosis. The study also discusses the insights and lessons yielded by the prior works. The survey culminates with future direction and scope, which will subsequently help in addressing the challenges faced within automated skin cancer diagnosis.

AI-Powered Diagnosis of Skin Cancer: A Contemporary Review, Open Challenges and Future Research Directions

Artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare plays a pivotal role in combating many fatal diseases, such as skin, breast, and lung cancer. AI is an advanced form of technology that uses mathematical-based algorithmic principles similar to those of the human mind for cognizing complex challenges of the healthcare unit. Cancer is a lethal disease with many etiologies, including numerous genetic and epigenetic mutations. Cancer being a multifactorial disease is difficult to be diagnosed at an early stage. Therefore, genetic variations and other leading factors could be identified in due time through AI and machine learning (ML). AI is the synergetic approach for mining the drug targets, their mechanism of action, and drug-organism interaction from massive raw data. This synergetic approach is also facing several challenges in data mining but computational algorithms from different scientific communities for multi-target drug discovery are highly helpful to overcome the bottlenecks in AI for drug-target discovery. AI and ML could be the epicenter in the medical world for the diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of almost any disease in the near future. In this comprehensive review, we explore the immense potential of AI and ML when integrated with the biological sciences, specifically in the context of cancer research. Our goal is to illuminate the many ways in which AI and ML are being applied to the study of cancer, from diagnosis to individualized treatment. We highlight the prospective role of AI in supporting oncologists and other medical professionals in making informed decisions and improving patient outcomes by examining the intersection of AI and cancer control. Although AI-based medical therapies show great potential, many challenges must be overcome before they can be implemented in clinical practice. We critically assess the current hurdles and provide insights into the future directions of AI-driven approaches, aiming to pave the way for enhanced cancer interventions and improved patient care. 

Artificial intelligence in cancer diagnosis and therapy: Current status and future perspective.

Melanoma skin cancer is one of the most dangerous types of skin cancer, which, if not diagnosed early, may lead to death. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis is needed to detect melanoma. Traditionally, a dermatologist utilizes a microscope to inspect and then provide a report on a biopsy for diagnosis; however, this diagnosis process is not easy and requires experience. Hence, there is a need to facilitate the diagnosis process while still yielding an accurate diagnosis. For this purpose, artificial intelligence techniques can assist the dermatologist in carrying out diagnosis. In this study, we considered the detection of melanoma through deep learning based on cutaneous image processing. For this purpose, we tested several convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures, including DenseNet201, MobileNetV2, ResNet50V2, ResNet152V2, Xception, VGG16, VGG19, and GoogleNet, and evaluated the associated deep learning models on graphical processing units (GPUs). A dataset consisting of 7146 images was processed using these models, and we compared the obtained results. The experimental results showed that GoogleNet can obtain the highest performance accuracy on both the training and test sets (74.91% and 76.08%, respectively).

Automatic Classification of Melanoma Skin Cancer with Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

Deep learning (DL) is a branch of machine learning and artificial intelligence that has been applied to many areas in different domains such as health care and drug design. Cancer prognosis estimates the ultimate fate of a cancer subject and provides survival estimation of the subjects. An accurate and timely diagnostic and prognostic decision will greatly benefit cancer subjects. DL has emerged as a technology of choice due to the availability of high computational resources. The main components in a standard computer-aided design (CAD) system are preprocessing, feature recognition, extraction and selection, categorization, and performance assessment. Reduction of costs associated with sequencing systems offers a myriad of opportunities for building precise models for cancer diagnosis and prognosis prediction. In this survey, we provided a summary of current works where DL has helped to determine the best models for the cancer diagnosis and prognosis prediction tasks. DL is a generic model requiring minimal data manipulations and achieves better results while working with enormous volumes of data. Aims are to scrutinize the influence of DL systems using histopathology images, present a summary of state-of-the-art DL methods, and give directions to future researchers to refine the existing methods.
