In recent years, the demand for more efficient cooling circuits has resulted in active studies of nanofluids, two-component liquids consisting of a base fluid, and dispersed nanoparticles with high thermal conductivity. From the viewpoint of both physics and chemistry, nanofluids are systems that require the characterization of many interconnected thermal and chemical properties. This perspective article sums up the state of the art and recent trends in the development and applications of nanofluids and especially carbon nanofluids. A focus of the paper is the possibilities of photothermal and photoacoustic methods—as techniques combining molecular spectroscopy and thermal characterization—for the assessment of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of nanofluids. The possibilities of photothermal spectroscopy for wider characterization of nanofluids and related materials are discussed and compared with other techniques. As nanofluids are one of the examples of complex objects dedicated to photothermal spectroscopy, more general outlooks of phototermics are also discussed.

Photothermal spectroscopy: A promising tool for nanofluids

A new generation of sensors can be engineered based on the sensing of several markers to satisfy the conditions of the multimodal detection principle. From this point of view, photoacoustic-based sensing approaches are essential. The photoacoustic effect relies on the generation of light-induced deformation (pressure) perturbations in media, which is essential for sensing applications since the photoacoustic response is formed due to a contrast in the optical, thermal, and acoustical properties. It is also particularly important to mention that photoacoustic light-based approaches are flexible enough for the measurement of thermal/elastic parameters. Moreover, the photoacoustic approach can be used for imaging and visualization in material research and biomedical applications. The advantages of photoacoustic devices are their compact sizes and the possibility of on-site measurements, enabling the online monitoring of material parameters. The latter has significance for the development of various sensing applications, including biomedical ones, such as monitoring of the biodistribution of biomolecules. To extend sensing abilities and to find reliable measurement conditions, one needs to clearly understand all the phenomena taking place during energy transformation during photoacoustic signal formation. Therefore, the current paper is devoted to an overview of the main measurement principles used in the photoacoustic setup configurations, with a special focus on the key physical parameters.

Application of the Photoacoustic Approach in the Characterization of Nanostructured Materials

The photoacoustic method with piezoelectric detection for the simultaneous evaluation of the thermophysical properties is proposed. The approach is based on the settling of an additional heat sink for redistribution of heat fluxes deposited on the sample surface. First, the approach was tested on the porous silicon with well-defined morphology and well-studied properties. Then, heat capacity and thermal conductivity of silicon nanowire arrays were investigated by recovering the experimental data through numerical simulations. The decrease in heat capacity and effective thermal conductivity of the samples upon increasing thickness and porosity of the sample was observed. Such a behavior could be caused by the increase of the structure heterogeneity. In particular, this can be related to a larger disorder (increased density of broken nanowires and larger porosity) that appears during the etching process of the thick layers.

Features of heat transport in silicon-based porous structures with different morphology before and after thermal annealing are investigated. Specifically, fractal-like porous silicon and silicon nanowire arrays samples were considered. All the structures were annealed in dry air at various temperatures in diapason from 600 °C up to 1000 °C for 20 minutes. The photoacoustic technique with gas-microphone registration was applied for the thermal diffusivity evaluation of the samples. Particularly, the amplitude frequency dependencies of photoacoustic response from the considered samples in the classical gas-microphone configuration were measured in the range from 10 Hz to 3 kHz. The simulation of the experimental dependencies with the use of appropriate model allowed us to evaluate thermal conductivity. It was found that the short time thermal annealing together with increasing annealing temperature leads to significant reduction of thermal transport in mesoporous silicon. On the opposite, the thermal properties of silicon nanowires remain unaffected.

Impact of thermal annealing on photoacoustic response and heat transport in porous silicon based nanostructured materials

In the paper the experimental study of heat transport across the interface "porous silicon/liquid" by photoacoustic technique is reported. Two cases with and without liquid covering of porous silicon surface were considered. Thermal perturbations were excited at the surface of porous silicon as a result of absorption of the light with modulated intensity. The resulting thermal-elastic stresses arising in the system were registered with piezoelectric transducer. The amplitude-frequency dependencies of the voltage on the piezoelectric electrodes were measured. The presence of the liquid film leads to decreasing of the amplitude of photoacoustic signal as a result of the thermal energy evacuation from the porous silicon into the liquid. The experimental dependencies were fitted with the results of simulation that takes into account heat fluxes separation at the porous silicon/liquid interface. With the presented method one can precisely measure heat fluxes transferred from the solid into contacting fluid. Moreover, the presented approach can be easily adopted for the thermal conductivity study of the different nanofluids as well as thermal resistance at the interface nanostructured solid/fluid.
