The use of alternative fuels and among them the biofuels of 1 st generation – fatty acid methyl esters FAME’s *) and pure plants oils – for propulsion of IC engines is an important objective in several countries in order to save the fossil fuels and to limit the CO 2 -production. The properties of bio-fuels and bio-blend-fuels can vary and this has an impact on the operation and emissions of Diesel engines and on the modern exhaust aftertreatment systems. The present paper represents the most important results obtained with RME at AFHB, EMPA and EC-JRC. Most of the activities were performed in the network project BioExDi (Biofuels, Exhaust Systems Diesel) in collaboration between industry and research institutes.

W artykule przedstawiono badania wplywu warunkow pracy silnika Diesla i obecności w oleju napedowym biokomponentow (FAME i FAEE) na profil skladu chemicznego emitowanych PM. Silnik badawczy FORD 2.0i 16V Duratorq TDCi spelnial normy emisji EURO IV. Pomiary prowadzono dla dwoch warunkow pracy silnika: w fazie I (20 Nm, 3800 obr./min) i w fazie II (120 Nm, 1000 obr./min). Do zasilania silnika uzywano konwencjonalnego oleju napedowego oraz biopaliw skladających sie z konwencjonalnego oleju napedowego z dodatkiem 20% (V/V) FAME lub FAEE. Analiza skladu chemicznego PM obejmowala: ekstrakcje PM, oczyszczanie ekstraktu, wzbogacenie go i oznaczenie SOF (rozpuszczalnej frakcji organicznej) techniką GC/MS. Interpretacji profili skladu chemicznego PM dokonywano z wykorzystaniem metod statystycznych. Stwierdzono, ze spadek predkości obrotowej i zwiekszenie obciązenia silnika powoduje wzrost calkowitej masowej emisji PM i skladnikow SOF. Zastosowanie biopaliw obniza emisje PM i skladnikow SOF, a silniejsza redukcja nastepuje przy zastosowaniu FAEE niz FAME. Slowa kluczowe: PM, cząstki stale, emisja, silnik Diesla, biopaliwa. Profile of the chemical composition of particulate matter (PM) emissions by using fuel with bio-components This paper is about the influence of working conditions of a diesel engine and biofuels on the chemical composition of particle matter (PM) profile. The engine test bed was a FORD 2.0i 16V Duratorq TDCi which complies with the EURO IV requirement on emission and a minitunnel AVL Smart Sampler SPC 472. Emissions of PM were investigated during standardized cycles over ISO 8178. The engine was operated in Mode I (20 Nm, 3800 rpm) and Mode II (120 Nm, 1000 rpm). Fuel compositions were varied from standard, commercial diesel fuel to its FAME and FAEE blends of 20% (V/V). A sample of the exhaust was passed through a standardized filter capturing particle matter, which were extracted and SOF (Soluble Organic Fraction) was determined in the PM’s extract by high-resolution gas chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer detector. The chemical composition profile of PM was determined using the statistical method. Results show that biofuels reduce the emission of PM and SOF, in the case of FAEE the effect is more significant. The emission of PM and SOF was higher in Mode II (high load, low rotational speed).

Profil składu chemicznego cząstek stałych (PM) emitowanych przy zastosowaniu paliw z biokomponentami

Reduction of NOx- and particle emissions of Diesel en- gines is worldwide an important challenge for the engi- neers. Some unregulated components, like NO2, NH3 and naoparticles NP *) came in the focus of attention in the last years. Application of EGR and / or SCR can lower NOx, using RME (Bxx) can increase NOx. What happens with NP, parameter which enters in some further steps of exhaust gas legislation in Europe? The present paper informs about the results with EGR, B100 and SCR obtained on a medium duty Diesel en- gine in the versions: Euro 3 (w/o EGR) & Euro 4 (with EGR), both without particle filter. The investigations were performed according to the pro- cedures of the international network project VERT *) dePN (de-activation, de-contamination, disposal of parti- cles & NOx).
