Signatures of selection and drivers for novel mutation on transmission-blocking vaccine candidate Pfs25 gene in western Kenya
Kevin O. Ochwedo,Shirley A. Onyango,Collince Jared Omondi,Pauline W. Orondo,Benyl M. Ondeto,Ming Chieh Lee,Harrysone Atieli,Sidney Ogolla,Andrew K. Githeko,A. Otieno,Wolfgang R Mukabana,Guiyun Yan,Daibin Zhong,James W. Kazura +13 more
TL;DR: It is unlikely that a PFS25 antigen-based vaccine would be affected by antigenic variations, however, continued monitoring of Pfs25 immunogenic domain 3 for possible variants that might impact vaccine antibody binding is warranted.

Malaria diagnosis in rural healthcare facilities and treatment-seeking behavior in malaria endemic settings in western Kenya
Collince Jared Omondi,Kevin O. Ochwedo,W. O. Otambo,David Odongo,A. Otieno,M. C. Lee,James W. Kazura,Andrew K. Githeko,Guyuin Yan +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper , passive case detection, which targeted all patients with suspected malaria cases, was conducted in ten public healthcare facilities over a three-month period, and the authors determined Malaria knowledge, treatment seeking behavior, and predictors of malaria treatment-seeking were all determined.

Impact of Agricultural Irrigation on Anemia in Western Kenya.
Collince Jared Omondi,Kevin O. Ochwedo,Henry Athiany,Shirley A. Onyango,David Odongo,A. Otieno,Pauline W. Orondo,Benyl M. Ondeto,Ming Chieh Lee,James W. Kazura,Andrew K. Githeko,Guiyun Yan +11 more
TL;DR: Data indicate that current agricultural irrigation schemes in malaria-endemic communities in this area have reduced the risk of anemia, and indicators of nutritional status pertinent to anemia pathogenesis were greater in communities located within the irrigated scheme versus those outside the irrigation scheme.

Rare Alleles and Signatures of Selection on the Immunodominant Domains of Pfs230 and Pfs48/45 in Malaria Parasites From Western Kenya
Kevin O. Ochwedo,Fredrick O. Ariri,W. O. Otambo,Edwin O. Magomere,I. Debrah,Shirley A. Onyango,Pauline W. Orondo,Harrysone Atieli,Sidney Ogolla,A. Otieno,Wolfgang R Mukabana,Andrew K. Githeko,Ming Chieh Lee,Guiyun Yan,Daibin Zhong,James W. Kazura +15 more
TL;DR: With the near fixation a polymorphic site and the proximity of mutated codons to antibody binding epitopes, it will be necessary to continue monitoring sequence modifications of these domains when designing TBVs that include Pfs230 and Pfs48/45 antigens.
Asymptomatic and submicroscopic Plasmodium infections in an area before and during integrated vector control in Homa Bay, western Kenya
Collince Jared Omondi,Otambo O Wilfred,David Odongo,Kevin O. Ochwedo,A. Otieno,Shirley A. Onyango,Pauline W. Orondo,Benyl M. Ondeto,Ming Chieh Lee,Daibin Zhong,James W. Kazura,Andrew K. Githeko,Guiyun Yan +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors evaluated the impact of indoor residual spraying (IRS) integrated with long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) on the prevalence of asymptomatic and sub-microscopic Plasmodium infections in Homa Bay County.
