The behavior of ZnO nanowires under uniaxial loading is characterized by means of a numerical model that accounts for all coupled mechanical, electrical, and thermal effects. The paper shows that thermal effects in the nanowires may greatly impact the predicted performance of piezoelectric and piezotronic nanodevices. The pyroelectric effect introduces new equivalent volumic charge in the body of the nanowire and surface charges at the boundaries, where Kapitza resistances are located, that act together with the piezoelectric charges to improve the predicted performance. It is shown that the proposed model is able to reproduce several effects experimentally observed by other research groups, and is a promising tool for the design of ultra-high efficient nanodevices.

Thermal-electric model for piezoelectric ZnO nanowires.

Zinc is the most abundant and broadly studied metal oxide semiconductor. Its photophysical properties include optical, electrical, magnetic, catalytic, sensing, energy storage, antibacterial, anti-oxidant, and drug delivery applications have been extensively explored. Tunable morphology, high specific surface volume, optically active, and large excitonic energy distinguished from the respective semiconductor metal oxides. Therefore, novel characteristics of ZnO NPs were applied in a broad variety of uses in technology development as well as clinical diagnostics. Morphology, size, surface charge, surface functionalization, and doping cations/anions in the ZnO crystal lattice have been explored which play a significant impact on their functionality. Formation of hybrid heterojunction of ZnO with lower bandgap energy materials to accelerate the photo-generating electron-hole pairs. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is crucial for catalytic and antibacterial/anticancer processes. Toxicity of the ZnO NPs also discussed, in which 1D nanostructured ZnO NPs have large specific surface areas resulting in greater interaction with cell membranes producing higher mobile Zn2+ species or free radicals facilitating apoptosis reaction. An appropriate configuration between ZnO and lower bandgap semiconductors to form (p-n or n-n) heterojunction reduces losses of electrons during the irradiation and enhances the absorption of light which is necessary for the outstanding performance of ZnO photocatalyst. More research is needed to improve the migration of photogenerated carriers of charge throughout the excitation stage, which will increase the amount of heterogeneous photocatalysis under UV, visible, and solar irradiation. We also discussed the impact of the various bacterial, microbial, viruses, and fungal threats, toxic potentiality, and anti-oxidant mechanisms against ZnO NPs were extensively highlighted.

Nano-scale devices based on zinc oxide (ZnO) are expected to be widely used as building-blocks of future innovative sensors due to outstanding properties of this semiconductive material including presence of a direct bandgap, piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, biocompatibility. Zinc oxide nanostructures can be also conceived as ultra-high efficiency nanogenerators to harvest electrical energy from the strain vibrational energy in order to drive an array of nanosensors. In fact most applications are based on the cooperative and average response of a large number of ZnO elongated micro/nanostructures, such as wires, rods and pillars. In order to assess the quality of the materials and their performance it is fundamental to characterize and then accurately model the specific electrical and piezoelectric properties of single ZnO structures, in an integrated manner. In this paper, we report on the brittle-to-ductile transition that occurs when reducing the size down to the nanoscale, which has been rarely documented. Then we report on focused ion beam machined of high aspect ratio nanowires and pillars and their mechanical and electrical (by means of conductive atomic force microscopy) characterization. Finally, we present new simulation results concerning ZnO nanowires under lateral bending obtained through the classical approach and the finite element method. Here we use a new power-law design concepts to accurately model the relevant electrical and mechanical size-effects whose existence has been emphasized in recent reviews.

Advanced mechanical and electrical characterization of piezoelectric ZnO nanowires for electro-mechanical modeling of enhanced performance sensors

In this work, we propose the synthesis of ZnO nanostructures through the thermal oxidation of ball-milled powders with the introduction of Mg and Sn doping species at the preliminary step of milling. We investigate the advantages and challenges of this two steps process for the production and fabrication of highly crystalline ZnO nanowires. This simple method allows us to fabricate ZnO nanowires with a higher quality core crystal at a much lower temperature and for a shorter processing time than the state-of-the-art, and decorated with by ZnO2 nanoparticles as determined via TEM analysis. The main findings will show that the crystalline core of the nanowires is of hexagonal ZnO while the nanoparticles on the surface are ZnO2 cubic type. Generally, the method proves to be suitable for applications that require a high surface-to-volume ratio, for example, catalysis phenomena, in which the presence of zinc oxides species can play an important role.
