Government spending on infrastructure and economic growth in Nigeria

This study primary examines the effects of government infrastructural expenditure on economic development in Nigeria. Secondary data sourced from reported annual spending on selected infrastructure and annual Gross Domestic Products were statistically analyzed. The data treatments used for the secondary data were unit root and co-integration tests using Augmented Dickeyâ€“Fuller and Phillipâ€“Perron model. Weighted least square was also used to test the sample of 37-year annual time series using vector error correction model. The data analysis was done with descriptive statistics. Findings from the study revealed that government spending on transport, communication, education and health infrastructure have significant effects on economic growth; spending on agriculture and natural resources infrastructure recorded a significant inverse effect on economic growth in Nigeria. An element of fiscal illusion was observed in the government spending on agriculture and natural resources indicating that government is not contributing as much as the private sector in spending on agriculture and natural resources infrastructure in Nigeria.

Government Expenditure on Infrastructure as a Driver for Economic Growth in Nigeria

This study investigated the relationship between public investments in construction sector and economic growth in Nigeria. The study deployed econometric statistics to examine the existence of Wagner's Law and Keynesian Theory in Nigeria using published economic and construction sector data. It found that federal government capital expenditure influences economic growth negatively (t=-2.837, p(0.0084) I(0)=3.10 and I(1)=3.87); ECM(-1)=-0.196, p=0.000<0.05)); but for corruption, misapplication and diversion of capital project budgets. Although, this study partly confirmed the existence of Keynesian Theory, it cannot conclusively establish that construction investments stimulate economic growth in Nigeria. This signified that Nigerian economic models are defective and/or ineffective in transforming the huge capital spending on construction sector to economic growth, thereby making investment in construction sector an irrelevant strategy for economic policy formulation. It then placed the burden of economic rejuvenation through investments in construction sector on economic policy and decision makers in Nigeria. It recommended for diligence in budgeting and implementation of capital projects as the only way the capital expenditure can contribute to a meaningful economic growth.

Driving Public Investments in Construction Sector for Economic Growth in Nigeria: A Synthesis of Wagnerian and Keynesian Hypotheses

A cross sectional study was carried out between July and November, 2014 to determine the nutritional status and prevalence of intestinal schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma mansoni among Al-Majiri population in Kawo District, Kaduna Metropolis of Kaduna state, Nigeria. Three hundred and sixty (360) samples were collected and analyzed by formol-ether concentration techniques. Information on their ages and water contact activities were obtained through KAP questionnaire while anthropometric measurements were used to determine the nutritional status of the participants. Result obtained showed an overall prevalence of 18.6% and a mean intensity of 40 eggs/gram of stool. Prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni was not significantly different (p>0.05) among the age group. However, water contact activities significantly (p<0.05) influenced the prevalence of S. mansoni. There was an inverse correlation between intestinal schistosomiasis and nutritional status of Al-majiri population surveyed (r=-0.99). It is concluded that intestinal schistosomiasis is a significant health problem and a major cause of severe malnutrition among the population studied. To alleviate these problems, relevant government agencies and Non-Governmental Organization (NGOs) should embark on provision of potable water, adequate nutrition and regular mass literacy campaign on the need for improved personal hygiene.

Nutritional Status and Prevalence of Intestinal Schistosomiasis among Al-majiri Population in Kawo District of Kaduna Metropolis, Kaduna State-Nigeria

This paper examines the issue of poverty in Nigeria, its causes, previous attempts made by past and present administrations aimed at taming the monster coupled with the way forward for the country. Poverty itself is as old as the whole world. One of the Holy Scriptures even stated that the poor shall never seize in your midst. Poverty is a devil   it stirs a lot of misgiving. This is because it has a very devastating influence on its victims. It reduces the social and psychological prestige of its victims. Poverty is a condition of being poor. The quest to eradicate poverty has been identified as the most critical challenge facing development in the world today. Women and children are disproportionately affected by poverty. Poverty has been a serious challenge to governments in Nigeria. Its effect, which includes lack and deprivation in the basic necessities of life, is worrisome. Poverty humiliates and dehumanizes its victim . Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation. It is also one of the poorest countries in the world. Rapid progress in reducing poverty in Nigeria is dependent upon improved access to basic services, particularly health and education. If Nigeria fails to reduce poverty quickly enough, it is unlikely that the Millennium Development Goals will be achieved in Africa or globally. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are targeted at eradicating extreme hunger and poverty in the 189 member countries of the United Nations (UN). Nigeria as a member of the United Nation keyed into the implementation of the framework of the goals by formulating the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS), NEEDS as a policy is targeted at eradicating poverty and bringing about sustainable development. This is done through the establishment of Agencies like the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP). However, the scourge of poverty is till been felt by the majority of the citizens of the country who do not have access to primary health care, water and food. Unemployment, corruption, non-diversification of the economy, income inequality, laziness, and a poor education system can be considered to be some of the key factors contributing to poverty in Nigeria. Poverty prevention is more dependent on education than on any other factor, as an escape from poverty. Education is the primary means by which people can lift themselves out of poverty, yet the amount spent on education targeting low-income children falls far short of the need.
