Summary and Conclusions of the Meeting

This report sums up in two volumes the first 50 years of operation of the CERN Proton Synchrotron. After an introduction on the genesis of the machine, and a description of its magnet and powering systems, the first volume focuses on some of the many innovations in accelerator physics and instrumentation that it has pioneered, such as transition crossing, RF gymnastics, extractions, phase space tomography, or transverse emittance measurement by wire scanners. The second volume describes the other machines in the PS complex: the proton linear accelerators, the PS Booster, the LEP pre-injector, the heavy-ion linac and accumulator, and the antiproton rings.

Within the framework of the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU), the new LINAC4 is currently being commissioned to replace the existing LINAC2 proton source at CERN. After the expected completion at the end of 2016, the LINAC4 will accelerate H − ions to 160 MeV. To measure the transverse emittance of the H − beam, a method based on photo-detachment is proposed. This system will operate using a pulsed laser with light delivered via an optical fibre and subsequently focused onto the H − beam. The laser photons have sufficient energy to detach the outer electron and create H 0 /e − pairs. In a downstream dipole, the created H 0 particles are separated from the unstripped H − ions and their distribution is measured with a dedicated detector. By scanning the focused laser beam across the H − beam, the transverse emittance of the H − beam can be reconstructed. This paper will first discuss the concept, design and simulations of the laser emittance scanner and then present results from a prototype system used during the 12 MeV commissioning of the LINAC4.

The 160 MeV H− beam from the Linac4 (L4) linear accelerator at CERN will be injected into the proton synchrotron booster (PSB) with a new H− charge-exchange injection system. It will include a stripping foil, to convert H− into protons by stripping off the electrons. To gain experience with these very fragile foils, prior to the installation in the PSB, and test different foil materials and thicknesses, lifetimes of the foils, the foil changing mechanism and interlocking functions, a stripping foil test stand will be installed in the L4 transfer line in 2015. This paper describes the mechanical design of the system and discusses the test possibilities and parameters.

The future beam brightness and intensities required by the HL-LHC (High-Luminosity LHC) project and for possible new neutrino production beams triggered a deep revision of the LHC injector performances. The analysis, progressing in the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project, outlined major limitations mainly related to collective effects - space charge in PSB and PS, electron cloud driven and TMCI instabilities in the SPS, longitudinal coupled bunch instabilities in the PS for example - but also to the existing hardware capability to cope with beam instabilities and losses. A summary of the observations and simulation studies carried out so far, as well as the future ones, will be presented. The solution proposed to overcome the different limitations and the plans for their implementation will be also briefly reviewed.

The high intensity/high brightness upgrade program at cern: status and challenges

The situation of the present pre-injection complex will be discussed with particular emphasis on the performance limitations. Mitigation measures will be discussed assuming that substantial consolidation work can be devoted to such improvements. Possible scenarios for the implementation of these measures will be outlined, together with an analysis of the impact on the performance of the LHC machine.

STATUS OF THE 160MeB H-INJECTION INTO THE CERN PSB

Linac4 will replacethe currentlyusedLinac2 in the LHC injector chain. The motivation is to increase the protonflux availability for the CERN accelerator complex and eventu- ally achieve the LHC ultimate luminosity goals. Linac4 will inject 160 MeV Hions in to the four existing rings of the PS Booster (PSB). A new charge-exchange multi turn injection scheme will be put into operation and re- quires a substantial upgrade of the injection region. Four kicker magnets (KSW) will be used to accomplish trans- verse phase space painting in order to match the injected beams to the requiredemittances. This paperpresentshard- ware issues and related beam dynamics studies for several painting schemes. Results of optimization studies of the injection process for different beam characteristic and sce- narios are discussed.
