The author systematically examines one of the important issues of information — establishing the market price. He introduces the concept of «search» — where a buyer wanting to get a better price, is forced to question sellers. The article deals with various aspects of finding the necessary information.

Economics of Information

Knowledge can be public, yet undiscovered, if independently created fragments are logically related but never retrieved, brought together, and interpreted. Information retrieval, although essential for assembling such fragments, is always problematic. The search process, like a scientific theory, can be criticized and improved, but can never be verified as capable of retrieving all information relevant to a problem or theory. This essential incompleteness of search and retrieval therefore makes possible, and plausible, the existence of undiscovered public knowledge. Three examples intended to throw light on the logic of undiscovered knowledge are constructed and analyzed. The argument is developed within the framework of a Popperian or critical approach within science and on Popper's distinction between subjective and objective knowledge--the distinction between World 2 and World 3.

Undiscovered Public Knowledge

In 2007, the social networking Web site MySpace apparently overthrew Google as the most visited Web site for U.S. Web users. If this heralds a new era of widespread online social networking, then it is important to investigate user behaviour and attributes. Although there has been some research into social networking already, basic demographic data is essential to set previous results in a wider context and to give insights to researchers, marketers and developers. In this article, the demographics of MySpace members are explored through data extracted from two samples of 15,043 and 7,627 member profiles. The median declared age of users was surprisingly high at 21, with a small majority of females. The analysis confirmed some previously reported findings and conjectures about social networking, for example, that female members tend to be more interested in friendship and males more interested in dating. In addition, there was some evidence of three different friending dynamics, oriented towards close friends, acquaintances, or strangers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, female and younger members had more friends than others, and females were more likely to maintain private profiles, but both males and females seemed to prefer female friends, with this tendency more marked in females for their closest friend. The typical MySpace user is apparently female, 21, single, with a public profile, interested in online friendship and logging on weekly to engage with a mixed list of mainly female “friends” who are predominantly acquaintances. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Social networks, gender, and friending: An analysis of MySpace member profiles

Perceived accessibility to information is proposed as a unifying concept for the design and evaluation of a wide variety of information systems and services. This field study measured end-user perceptions of three sources of information (computer-based, libraries, and individuals) for three samples of individuals. The results suggest that 1) accessibility is a multidimensional concept encompassing physical access to the source, the interface to the source, and the ability to physically retrieve potentially relevant information, and 2) perceptions of accessibility are moderated by prior experience with the source and contextual factors.

The dimensions of perceived accessibility to information: Implications for the delivery if information systems and services

Distributional equity is a particularly salient objective in public sector decision making, in general, and decision making concerning the delivery of public services such as education, libraries, sanitation, and public safety, in particular. In this paper two related bicriteria mathematical programming models are developed for identifying the trade-offs between overall output effectiveness and equity that result from alternative allocations of service resources among different service delivery sites branches. The models developed here incorporate equity in a more satisfactory manner than have previous efforts. An illustrative application of the models to the allocation of new books among the branches of a public library system is presented.

Output measures in libraries

ECONOMICS CAN BE DEFINED by both its subject matter and its approach. Although people tend to think of economics in connection with buying and selling, its subject, more generally, is choices: the allocation of resources among competing ends. Economics can be and has been applied to virtually every sphere of human behavior: not just in the market, but in such diverse areas as crime, marriage and 1 discrimination -wherever people are making choices among competing alternatives. The essence of the economic approach is its assumptions: (1) that people generally behave rationally to maximize their utility or wellbeing, and (2) that they compare costs and benefits and allocate their resources, including time and money, to achieve this goal. One way in which people act to increase their utility is to trade resources in the market. Economics further assumes that the market generally, but not always, results in the allocation of goods and services that creates the <greatest net benefit for all concerned. This description of the economic approach, of course, is an extreme simplification. Becker2 and MacKenzie3 have described the economic approach at greater length. The economic approach can be applied to many topics and has been applied recently to a topic which includes libraries-the economies of information.
