Electrochemical oxidation of the antiferromagnetically ordered SrCoO2.5, with brownmillerite-type structure, to the cubic ferromagnet SrCoO3, with perovskite structure, has been investigated in situ by neutron diffraction as well as by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy in specially designed electrochemical cells. The neutron diffraction experiments were performed twice, using two different wavelengths (λ = 1.2921(2) and 4.74 A) in order to better discriminate structural and magnetic changes as functions of the charge transfer. From the neutron diffraction experiments, two intermediate phases, SrCoO2.75 and SrCoO2.82±0.07, were characterized. No superstructure reflections were observed for the corresponding SrCoO2.75 phase. Instead we observed here, for the first time, 3D oxygen ordering during an oxygen intercalation reaction, as established for SrCoO2.82±0.07, which can be described as a tetragonal unit cell, related to the perovskite cell by a ≈ 2(a√2) and c ≈ 2a. Time-Resolved in Situ Studies of Oxygen Intercalation into SrCoO2.5, Performed by Neutron Diffraction and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

The main requirements to cathode materials for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells are considered with regard to the mechanism of oxygen reduction on the cathode. Factors that affect the oxide-ion and electronic conductivity and also the thermal expansion coefficient of compounds with the perovskite structure are discussed. The crystal structure, high-temperature properties and electrochemical characteristics of the most promising cathode materials based on oxygen-deficient complex oxides of cobalt and layered perovskite-like oxides of nickel and copper are analyzed. Cathode materials based on perovskite-like transition metal oxides for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells

The synthesis, crystal, and magnetic structures and the bulk magnetic properties of Ca2FeCoO5, a brownmillerite type oxide, are presented. The crystal structure, solved and refined from single crystal X-ray and powder neutron diffraction data, is described in Pbcm with cell parameters, a = 5.3652(3) A, b = 11.0995(5) A, c = 14.7982(7) A. Thus, one axis, b in this setting, is doubled in comparison with the standard brownmillerite structure description giving rise to two sets of octahedral and tetrahedral sites. Aided by the strong scattering contrast between Fe and Co for neutrons, a nearly perfect intralayer cation site ordering, not observed for any brownmillerite before, is detected in the tetrahedral layers. There is a lesser degree of cation site ordering in the octahedral sites. Overall, the Fe/Co site ordering is of the NaCl type both within and between the tetrahedral and octahedral layers. Intralayer Cation Ordering in a Brownmillerite Superstructure: Synthesis, Crystal, and Magnetic Structures of Ca2FeCoO5

The review addresses and highlights the main results of research on the physicohemical properties of single-phase and composite materials based on transition metal oxides in relation to their practical application as electrode materials for symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells. The electronic structures and thermodynamic stability of transition metal oxides with the perovskite structure are discussed. A detailed consideration is given to the thermal behaviour, chemical stability, electrical conductivity and electrochemical properties of a broad range of electrode materials based on iron-, chromium- and manganese-containing perovskite-like oxides and oxides that crystallize in other structure types. The analysis revealed the most promising compositions of electrode materials for symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells and effective approaches to the improvement of their functional characteristics. The bibliography includes 202 references.

Electrode materials based on complex d-metal oxides for symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells

The crystal and magnetic structures of the two related phases, Sr2MnGaO5 and Ca2MnAlO5 are reported. Rietveld analysis of neutron powder diffraction has revealed that both phases adopt the brownmillerite structure. Subtle differences in structure lead to the structure of Sr2MnGaO5 being best described by the space group Icmm
