The interferometers now being developed to detect gravitational waves work by measuring the relative positions of widely separated masses. Two fundamental sources of quantum-mechanical noise determine the sensitivity of such an interferometer: (i) fluctuations in number of output photons (photon-counting error) and (ii) fluctuations in radiation pressure on the masses (radiation-pressure error). Because of the low power of available continuous-wave lasers, the sensitivity of currently planned interferometers will be limited by photon-counting error. This paper presents an analysis of the two types of quantum-mechanical noise, and it proposes a new technique---the "squeezed-state" technique---that allows one to decrease the photon-counting error while increasing the radiation-pressure error, or vice versa. The key requirement of the squeezed-state technique is that the state of the light entering the interferometer's normally unused input port must be not the vacuum, as in a standard interferometer, but rather a "squeezed state"---a state whose uncertainties in the two quadrature phases are unequal. Squeezed states can be generated by a variety of nonlinear optical processes, including degenerate parametric amplification.

Quantum Mechanical Noise in an Interferometer

How much noise does quantum mechanics require a linear amplifier to add to a signal it processes? An analysis of narrow-band amplifiers (single-mode input and output) yields a fundamental theorem for phase-insensitive linear amplifiers; it requires such an amplifier, in the limit of high gain, to add noise which, referred to the input, is at least as large as the half-quantum of zero-point fluctuations. For phase-sensitive linear amplifiers, which can respond differently to the two quadrature phases ("$cos\ensuremath{\omega}t$" and "$sin\ensuremath{\omega}t$"), the single-mode analysis yields an amplifier uncertainty principle---a lower limit on the product of the noises added to the two phases. A multimode treatment of linear amplifiers generalizes the single-mode analysis to amplifiers with nonzero bandwidth. The results for phase-insensitive amplifiers remain the same, but for phase-sensitive amplifiers there emerge bandwidth-dependent corrections to the single-mode results. Specifically, there is a bandwidth-dependent lower limit on the noise carried by one quadrature phase of a signal and a corresponding lower limit on the noise a high-gain linear amplifier must add to one quadrature phase. Particular attention is focused on developing a multimode description of signals with unequal noise in the two quadrature phases.

Quantum limits on noise in linear amplifiers

The properties of a unique set of quantum states of the electromagnetic field are reviewed. These ‘squeezed states’ have less uncertainty in one quadrature than a coherent state. Proposed schemes for the generation and detection of squeezed states as well as potential applications are discussed.

Squeezed states of light

In this review, a general algorithm for constructing coherent states of dynamical groups for a given quantum physical system is presented. The result is that, for a given dynamical group, the coherent states are isomorphic to a coset space of group geometrical space. Thus the topological and algebraic structure of the coherent states as well as the associated dynamical system can be extensively discussed. In addition, a quantum-mechanical phase-space representation is constructed via the coherent-state theory. Several useful methods for employing the coherent states to study the physical phenomena of quantum-dynamic systems, such as the path integral, variational principle, classical limit, and thermodynamic limit of quantum mechanics, are described.

Coherent states: Theory and some Applications

Quantum-mechanical calculations of the mean-square fluctuation spectra in optical homodyning and heterodyning are made for arbitrary input and local-oscillator quantum states. In addition to the unavoidable quantum fluctuations, it is shown that excess noise from the local oscillator always affects homodyning and, when it is broadband, also heterodyning. Both the quantum and the excess noise of the local oscillator can be eliminated by coherent subtraction of the two outputs of a 50-50 beam splitter. This result also demonstrates the fact that the basic quantum noise in homodyning and heterodyning is signal quantum fluctuation, not local-oscillator shot noise.

In Part I of this three-part study, it was shown that novel quantum states, called two-photon coherent states (TCS), have significant potential for improving free-space optical communications. Because TCS radiation does not possess a classical analog, i.e., its diagonal P -representation is highly singular, the semiclassical conditional Poisson process model for direct detection is not applicable to TCS reception. In this paper, photoemissive detection of arbitrary quantized radiation fields is studied with incorporation of the nontrivial effects of detector quantum efficiency. General theorems are derived permitting the application of classical point process results to the detection and estimation of signals in arbitrary quantum states. These general theorems are applied to determining the performance of TCS optical communication systems that employ direct, heterodyne, or homodyne detection in binary decision as well as in linear modulation problems. It is shown that the use of TCS radiation with direct detection or heterodyne detection results in minimal performance increments over comparable coherent-state systems. Homodyne detection, however, can achieve the full TCS signal-to-noise ratio improvement predicted in Part I of this study. The increase in homodyne signal-to-noise ratio obtained by use of TCS radiation yields significant performance gains in both linear modulation and antipodal signal detection.
