Directly modulated semiconductor lasers exhibit a dynamic wavelength shift (chirping) arising from gain-induced variations of the laser refractive index. The effect of laser chirping on the performance of multi-Gb/s lightwave systems operating at a wavelength of 1550 nm is investigated. Models suitable for computer-aided analysis are used to describe the dynamic response of the laser and the propagation of chirped optical pulses through a step-index single-mode optical fibre. A truncated pulse train, Gauss quadrature rule method is used to evaluate the average bit error rate of the receiver. This permits pattern effects in the transmitted optical waveform due to the laser dynamics and nonlinear optical power transmission properties of optical fibers to be included in the system model. The influence that modulation and device parameters have on the receiver sensitivity is assessed. >

The effect of laser chirping on lightwave system performance

The derivation and analysis of optimum multiuser detectors for additive-rate and additive-light Poisson multiple-access channels are studied. The observed point process models the output of an ideal photodetector illuminated by several synchronous or asynchronous users who modulate coherent light of the same frequency. Dynamic programming-based decision rules for the asynchronous multiple-access channel exhibit the same computational complexity as their synchronous counterparts and are shown to be optimum under the criteria of minimum error probability and maximum likelihood sequence detection. Upper and lower bounds on the minimum uncoded bit error rate achievable with arbitrary signal constellations are obtained in terms of the error probability of binary hypothesis testing problems. A particular case of these results, namely, the single-user finite-length intersymbol interference problem, solves the error rate analysis of optimum direct-detection systems for dispersive optical fibers.

Multiple-access channels with point-process observations: Optimum demodulation

A method for evaluating the average error probability in digital fiber optic transmission systems is described. It takes into account the statistical properties of the main impairments that affect the information signal, i.e., shot noise (dark current included), thermal noise, and intersymbol interference. Unlike other methods, the analysis of shot-noise statistics does not entail the second-moment characterization alone, but uses a number of moments sufficient to evaluate the error probability with a high degree of accuracy. For this purpose it is shown how the cumulants of shot noise and intersymbol interference of any order can be computed. The baseband pulse response and the statistical distribution of the avalanche-photodetector gain are assumed to be available. Moreover, techniques for exploiting the cumulants are given; knowledge of the cumulants allows one to compute the probability of error by means of Gaussian numerical integration rules. Finally, some results and comparisons are reported.

Error probability in optical fiber transmission systems

Computer simulation of a 2.5-Gb/s intensity-modulated/direct-detected optical system with high path dispersion is described. This simulation, based on single-mode laser diode rate equations, includes transmit and receiver circuit filtering, receiver circuit noise, avalanche photodiode noise, fiber dispersion, and laser chirp. The rate equations are sufficiently general to model mode-offset distributed feedback laser diodes. The system power penalty, due to laser chirp and fiber dispersion, is calculated using Gaussian quadrature numerical integration. By simulating a population of some 12800 laser diodes and correlating the performance of each laser in a transmission system with its spectral characteristics, it is possible to deduce laser specifications that will assure satisfactory operation in long-span links. These results are used to study a laser diode specification under consideration by CCITT, and, by studying the simulated laser line shapes, some modifications to the CCITT specification are considered. >
