Powdery mildew fungi (Erysiphales) are among the most common and important plant fungal pathogens. These fungi are obligate biotrophic parasites that attack nearly 10,000 species of angiosperms, including major crops, such as cereals and grapes. Although cultural and biological practices may reduce the risk of infection by powdery mildew, they do not provide sufficient protection. Therefore, in practice, chemical control, including the use of fungicides from multiple chemical groups, is the most effective tool for managing powdery mildew. Unfortunately, the risk of resistance development is high because typical spray programs include multiple applications per season. In addition, some of the most economically destructive species of powdery mildew fungi are considered to be high-risk pathogens and are able to develop resistance to several chemical classes within a few years. This situation has decreased the efficacy of the major fungicide classes, such as sterol demethylation inhibitors, quinone outside inhibitors and succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors, that are employed against powdery mildews. In this review, we present cases of reduction in sensitivity, development of resistance and failure of control by fungicides that have been or are being used to manage powdery mildew. In addition, the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance to fungicides are also outlined. Finally, a number of recommendations are provided to decrease the probability of resistance development when fungicides are employed.

Fungicide Resistance in Powdery Mildew Fungi.

The occurrence and geographic distribution of powdery mildew on cucurbits was studied in the Czech Republic, Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, as well as in Turkey and Israel, during the period 1995–2000. In total, 599 leaf samples with powdery mildew symptoms were collected from cucurbits from 166 locations within the Czech Republic; an additional 69 samples were collected from 42 locations elsewhere. Two powdery mildews (Golovinomyces cichoracearum and Podosphaera xanthii) were identified. The host range included the cultivated cucurbits (Cucumis melo, C. sativus, Cucurbita pepo, C. maxima, and Citrullus lanatus) and several other species. P. xanthii was the only powdery mildew pathogen found in Spain, Israel, and Turkey. P. xanthii and G. cichoracearum were detected in the other surveyed countries, occurring in both mixed infections and separately. In the more northerly latitudes and higher elevations, G. cichoracearum is more often the single species. G. cichoracearum was the dominant powdery mildew species in the Czech Republic (detected in 98.8% of the locations there); P. xanthii was found as the lone species in 1.2% of locations. At 28.4% of locations, G. cichoracearum was found with P. xanthii as mixed infections. The hyperparasitic fungus Ampelomyces quisqualis was found in 30% of the samples from the Czech Republic and was also recorded in Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Great Britain.

Species spectra, distribution and host range of cucurbit powdery mildews in the Czech Republic, and in some other European and Middle Eastern countries.

Cucurbit powdery mildew (CPM), a disease on field and greenhouse cucurbit crops worldwide, is caused most frequently by two obligate erysiphaceous ectoparasites (Golovinomyces orontii s.l., Podosphaera xanthii) that are highly variable in their pathogenicity and virulence. Various independent systems of CPM race determination and denomination are used worldwide, having to date been differentiated on different cultivars or lines of melon (Cucumis melo L.). We briefly review historical perspectives and the current state of understanding of the virulence variation of the two CPM pathogens at the pathogenic race level, their differentiation and their designation. Furthermore, we propose for use by the international CPM research, breeding, seed and production community new tools to enhance research, communication and management of CPM. These tools consist of five components: 1) a set of 21 differential genotypes of Cucumis melo L. for the identification of CPM races; 2) a triple-part, septet code for meaningful, concise designation of CPM races; 3) protocols for maintaining CPM isolates and differential genotypes and for laboratory assays to examine the virulence of CPM isolates; 4) rules and principles of practical application of this system in breeding, seed production and cucurbit growing, including a proposal of a race denomination suitable for practical application; and 5) crucial activities leading to the implementation and running of new tools for CPM research and management. The five components of this package have equal importance, forming a compact system, and none of them can be omitted.

Cucurbit powdery mildews: methodology for objective determination and denomination of races

BACKGROUND: Cucurbit powdery mildew elicited by Podosphaera fusca (Fr.) U Braun & N Shishkoff limits crop production in Spain. Disease control is largely dependent on fungicides such as sterol demethylation inhibitors (DMIs). Fungicide resistance is an increasing problem in this pathogen. To overcome such risk, it is necessary to design rational control programmes based upon knowledge of field resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the state of DMI sensitivity of Spanish P. fusca populations and provide tools for improved disease management.

RESULTS: Using a leaf-disc assay, sensitivity to fenarimol, myclobutanil and triadimenol of 50 isolates of P. fusca was analysed to determine discriminatory concentrations between sensitive and resistant isolates. As no clearly different groups of isolates could be identified, discriminatory concentrations were established on the basis of maximum fungicide field application rate, 100 mg L−1 for the three fungicides tested. Subsequently, a survey of DMI resistance was carried out in different provinces located in the south central area of Spain during the cucurbit growing seasons in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Examination of a collection of 250 isolates revealed that 23% were resistant to fenarimol and 7% to triadimenol, the provinces of Almeria, Badajoz and Murcia being the locations with the highest frequencies of resistance. By contrast, no resistance to myclobutanil was found.

CONCLUSION: Results show that fenarimol and, to a lesser extent, triadimenol have become less efficient for controlling cucurbit powdery mildew in Spain. These are important observations that should lead to reconsideration of the current disease management programmes. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry

Sensitivities to DMI fungicides in populations of Podosphaera fusca in south central Spain

A review of Japan’s fungicide usage from the 1960s to recent times was conducted using data from the National Institute of Environmental Studies, Japan A total of 16 commonly used fungicides were assessed and these are: captan, chlorothalonil, fenarimol, ferbam, fosetyl-Al, iprodione, isoprothiolane, mancozeb, mepronil, metalaxyl, myclobutanil, pencycuron, thiophanate-methyl, tolclofos-methyl, triadimefon and trifloxystrobin The assessment revealed that the most used fungicide within the period (1962–2014) was chlorothalonil with a maximum usage amount of 1795 tons/year The least used was found to be myclobutanil with a maximum usage amount of 8 tons/year within the same reporting period Generally, the usage of most of the fungicides peaked between the 1980s to early 2000s For most of these fungicides, their usage amounts have decreased in recent times However, the continuous usage of these fungicides has a potential to cause problems in the environment ranging from mere irritations to being very toxic to human beings and organisms

Trends in usage of selected fungicides in Japan between 1962 and 2014: a review

A total of 108 isolates of cucurbit powdery mildew (CPM) fungi, 78Golovinomyces cichoracearum (Gc) and 30Podosphaera xanthii (Px), originating from nine Czech regions and 22 districts of the Czech Republic were collected in the years 2001–2004. These isolates were screened for tolerance and/or resistance to the three frequently used fungicides (fenarimol, dinocap, benomyl). Fungicide sensitivity was determined by a modified leaf-disc bioassay with five concentrations. Fungicide efficacy differed significantly: fenarimol was the most effective and all isolates of both CPM were controlled by the recommended concentration (36µg a.i. ml−1). Some isolates expressed resistance (profuse sporulation) or tolerance (limited sporulation) to lower concentrations (9.6 and 18µg a.i. ml−1). Specific temporal variation in tolerance/resistance was observed, with some isolates ofGc from 2002 evincing tolerant or resistant reactions to these low fenarimol concentrations, but isolates with similar reactions were not detected during the years 2003–2004. Dinocap showed decreasing efficacy during all 3 years. A shift to more tolerant reactions in the CPM populations was detected forGc in 2001–2002, and forPx in 2001 and 2004. Benomyl was found to be ineffective, because the majority of screened isolates (88%Gc and 97%Px) belonged to the highly resistant strains, with resistant reaction on the recommended concentration (250µg a.i. ml−1) and tolerance or resistance on higher concentrations (500 and 1000µg a.i. ml−1). Sensitivity differed between the CPM species. Whereas practically allPx isolates (except one from 2003) were resistant, 12% ofGc isolates from the years 2001–2003 showed sensitive and/or tolerant reactions. In 2004, only benomyl-resistantGc strains were detected. Variation in tolerance/resistance was detected to all screened fungicides during the course of this study at some repeatedly sampled locations.
