This invention generally relates to one or more computer networks having computers like personal computers or network servers with microprocessors linked by broadband transmission means and having hardware, software, firmware, and other means such that at least one parallel processing operation occurs that involve at least two computers in the network. More particularly, this invention relates to one or more large networks composed of smaller networks and large numbers of computers connected, like the Internet, wherein more than one separate parallel processing operation involving more than one different set of computers occurs simultaneously and wherein ongoing processing linkages can be established between virtually any microprocessors of separate computers connected to the network. Still more particularly, this invention relates to business arrangements enabling the shared used of network microprocessors for parallel and other processing, wherein personal computer owners provide microprocessor processing power to a network, preferably for parallel processing, in exchange for network linkage to other personal and other computers supplied by network providers, including linkage to other microprocessors for parallel or other processing; the basis of the exchange between owners and providers being whatever terms to which the parties agree, subject to governing laws, regulations, or rules, including payment from either party to the other based on periodic measurement of net use or provision of processing power.

Global network computers

A method and system for assigning tasks to peer-to-peer computers connected via a wide area network. The system includes a central computer and one or more remote computers. The central computer and the remote computers operate in one of a pluralility of relationships, including a subscriber relationship and a contractor relationship. In the subscriber relationship, the central computer determines whether a remote computer still subscribes to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and bills the remote computer accordingly. In the contractor relationship, the central computer polls each remote computer to inquire about the available times when the remote computer is idle and the computational capabilities of the remote computer. The central computer then executes an assignment or scheduling program to assign tasks to idle remote computers for processing. After the idle remote computers finish processing the assigned tasks, the central computer credits a payment to the remote computer. In one embodiment, the remote computer disconnects from the network while processing the assigned task and periodically reconnects to transmit status reports to the central computer.

An object-oriented method and apparatus for delivering information from one component to another across a network of computers includes the steps of loading implementation libraries for adapter and information provider components into memory and creating factory objects for those components. When a request arrives over the network, the factory objects are called and stream objects are created by the factory objects. Data is then streamed from an information provider source to the original requestor using the stream objects.

Object-oriented method and apparatus for information delivery

New distributed computing applications are driving the development of more specialized protocols, as well as demanding greater control over the communication substrate. Here, a network subsystem that supports modular, fine-grained construction of high-level protocols such as atomic multicast and group RPC is described. The approach is based on extending the standard hierarchical model of the x-kernel with composite protocols in which micro-protocol objects are composed within a standard runtime framework. Each micro-protocol realizes a separate semantic property, leading to a highly modular and configurable implementation. In contrast with similar systems, this approach provides finer granularity and more flexible inter-object communication. The design and prototype implementation runing on Mach are described. Performance results are also given for a micro-protocol suite implementing variants of group RPC.

A method and apparatus for asynchronously calling and implementing objects is disclosed. Object calls to perform an operation are performed asynchronously by calling the appropriate stub function from the client application and passing in the object reference, input parameters, and a pointer to a completion routine. The object reference, input parameters, and completion routine address are provided to a client-side execution environment. The client-side execution environment stores the completion routine address and transmits the input parameters to a server-side execution environment. The server-side execution environment calls a method in the server application that implements the requested operation. The server application performs the requested operation. Once the call has been responded to, the client-side execution environment calls the completion routine and passes it the output parameters to the requested operation. The client application can continue performing other asynchronous operations before the completion routine is called. To asynchronously implement an object that has been called, the appropriate method function in the server application is called which, in turn, calls an asynchronous operation. Once the asynchronous operation returns, the application responds to the client application.

A transport-independent asynchronous RPC (remote procedure call) mechanism (ASTRA) that combines the advantages of both RPC and message-passing IPC (interprocess communication) has been designed and implemented. ASTRA calls do not block the caller (client) and the replies can be received as and when they are needed, thus allowing the client execution to proceed locally in parallel with the server invocation. All the calls are received and executed by the server in the order called by the client. ASTRA is unique among other asynchronous RPC systems in allowing its users to explicitly specify whether low-latency or high-throughput is required for a call, and in providing highly optimized lightweight intramachine calls. ASTRA is built within the framework of the SHILPA distributed computing environment. >
