Relying on the software platform FASTEST different sub-models of various complexities designed in the framework of the Collaborative Research Centre 568 were combined to form integral models. As review paper, this contribution summarizes the developments of a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) based integral model for reliably simulating gas turbine combustion chambers. The model was analyzed, validated and evaluated in terms of fuel flexibility, flow, mixing and combustion modeling and predictability. The parallel efficiency for large simulations with the integral model could be improved by using a load balancing strategy based on graph theory.

Modelling of Premixed Combustion Using G-Equation in RANS Context

A model for premixed turbulent combustion is investigated using a RANS-approach. The evolution of the flame front is described with the help of the level set approach [1] which is used for tracking of propagating interfaces in free-surface flows, geodesics, grid generation and combustion. The fluid properties are conditioned on the flame front position using a burntunburnt probability function across the flame front. Computations are performed using the code FASTEST-3D which is a flow solver for a non-orthogonal, block-structured grid. Turbulent premixed combustion is a highly complex process characterised by several phenomena. The turbulent velocity field advects the reacting components and combustion alters the fluid properties and therefore, inversely influences the flow. A complete model of premixed turbulent combustion must take into account the mutual interaction of turbulence, chemistry reactions, and fluid flow. The concept of the level set introduced in [2] is used in this paper. The level set method is a computational technique for tracking propagating interfaces. The evolution of this interface is described by a single nonreacting scalar equation. The advantages of the level set method is that it is especially designed to deal with problems involving topological changing of interfaces, merging interface, singularities and formation of sharp cusp [3]. It allows to link the complicated physics and chemistry of the flame front to the interface propagating velocity s l.
