Superovulatory response following FSH, eCG-FSH and hMG and pregnancy rates following transfer of hatched blastocyst embryos with different diameter and shape in dromedary camel

Superovulation, embryo recovery and transfer were attempted in 19 dromedary camels of about 6–10 years of age, and having calved at least once. Superovulation was done using two commercially available porcine FSH preparations, FSH-I (11 donors) and FSH-2 (8 donors) during a luteal phase created by inducing ovulation with hCG. The superovulatory response was assessed by ultrasonography. The embryo recovery was attempted non-surgically in sitting position on day 8 and day 7 after first mating in one FSH-1 and one FSH-2 group, respectively. Considerable individual variation in response to the superovulatory stimulus was observed. No significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of superovulatory response and embryo recovery (p>0.05). In total 30 embryos were recovered from 17 donors (1.51 embryos/donor). Recipients were synchronized with donors using hCG. Eight embryos were transferred, resulting in two pregnancies and live births.

In 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic became a serious issue around the world. Low blood oxygen is the most important symptom of COVID-19. However, many patients have no obvious respiratory symptoms and exhibit silent hypoxemia, which is typically not noticed by patients but can cause severe damage. Hypoxemia is also related to high-altitude illness, highlighting the importance of detecting hypoxemia for travelers in high-altitude areas. The most commonly used device for monitoring blood oxygen remains difficult to access for the general population. To address this problem, a few camera-based methods have been proposed. Nevertheless, these approaches are generally not robust and have not been evaluated completely. Therefore, we conduct a pilot study to show the feasibility of camera-based SpO 2 estimation, and then propose a contact-free system by which to measure SpO 2 using a general RGB camera. We adopt a k-nearest neighbor model as the backbone algorithm. For a comprehensive evaluation, we compiled two SpO 2 datasets: one collected at an altitude of 3,150 meters, and the other collected at 102 meters above sea level. Sixty subjects participated in the experiments, which included a mobile phone, a webcam, and an industrial camera. In a leave-one-subject-out validation, the proposed method respectively yields a mean absolute error of 4.39%, 4.45%, and 4.22% using the three cameras. In general, the proposed approach outperforms the benchmark algorithms. To our best knowledge, this is the first work to utilize real high-attitude data to address camera-based SpO 2 measurement.

Phosphorus is an essential macronutrient that plays vital role in living organisms. Adequate P availability results in improved root growth, crop quality, energy storage and higher grain yield in crops [1]. It is highly limiting in most tropical soils [2,3]. The low activity clay dominating mineral constituent of the highly weathered tropical soils has been identified as a factor limiting availability of P in soils [4]. Acid tropical soils are characterized by high concentrations of oxides and hydroxides of Al and Fe that have insatiable appetite for P [4]. Management practices including the use of chemical P fertilizers and liming materials are popular in optimizing crop performance and yield on nutrient degraded soils in the tropics [5]. The limitations to use of P fertilizer are rising procurement cost, susceptibility losses to leaching, run off (on sandy textured soils) and fixation by soil inorganic colloids [6]. Nutrient use efficiency by crops is the ability of crops to produce high yield in soils limited in the nutrient added [7]. Nutrient use efficiency is high when enhanced crop yield is obtained from reduced fertilizer input cost and nutrient losses into the soil environment. Phosphorus use efficiency on field treated with conventional chemical fertilizers have been reported low (range of 5 – 40 %) for many tropical soils [6]. Low P use efficiencies in chemical fertilizers are contributed mainly by losses to leaching, run-off and fixation by soils [8]. Nutrient losses from farms are important in soil degradation and underground water pollution [9]. Benefits of improved soil organic matter on soil physical and chemical properties as it affects nutrient use efficiency have been reported [10]. Soil organic matter from applied green manure, crop residues, animal manure and compost improved soil aggregate stability, increased water and basic cation holding capacities and chelate toxic Al and Fe [11].
