fond of statements such as \"buffer action is ultimately dependent on a spacetime frame of reference.\" The main fault of this book, however, is that so much of it is outdated. It seems surprising that a text concerned with rational drug design should lack a discussion of protein structure and does not list deoxyribonucleic and ribonucleic acids in its index. Sulfonamide action is discussed without any mention of folic acid. The structures of coenzyme A and muscarine shown were proven to be incorrect several years ago. A discussion of acetylcholinesterase omits any mention either of \"nerve gases,\" which act by profound inhibition of this enzyme, or of the compounds designed to reverse this inhibition. Analgesics are discussed in terms of \"mixed sympathominetic and parasympathomimetic pharmacophoric moieties\"; there is no mention of Beckett's concept of \"analgesic receptor sites.\" Factual errors, misprints, and incorrect structural formulae are numerous. Heterocyclical structures are often printed in a way which makes it difficult to see what compound is being depicted. In view of the shortcomings and the high cost of this text it can be recommended neither to the physicians nor to the chemists for whom it was intended.

The first chapter is a comprehensive review (by Brandtzaeg) of tissue preparation methods and particularly fixation; and each of the subsequent chapters is devoted to one technique. Those covered include double-label immunofluorescence (Pryzwansky); the unlabelled antibody peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) method (Burns); the protein A-gold technique (Roth); double immunoenzymatic labelling (Mason and Woolston); and the use of proteolytic enzymes (Finley and Petrusz). Each chapter has a wide range of relevant references, and methods suitable for light and electron microscopy are discussed. Although much of the text consists of methodological detail, it is still very readable. In the current rush to use antibodies with tissue sections, much work of poor quality is being carried out, and this volume should be a considerable help to those in difficulty. Even the experienced investigator will learn a great deal from it. It is a wellproduced book, with good illustrations, which fills a gap in the literature. It is highly recommended.

Toxicological profile for alpha-, beta-, gamma, and delta-hexachlorocyclohexane

The cosmetic ingredient Zinc Pyrithione (ZPT) (CAS No 13463-41-7, EC No 236-671-3) with the chemical name Bis[(2-pyridyl-1-oxo)-thio]zinc is currently regulated as a preservative in rinse-off products (excluding oral hygiene products) in a concentration up to 0.5% in general and up to 1.0% in hair products (Annex V/8). Furthermore, ZPT is also allowed in a concentration up to 0.1% in leave-on hair products (Annex Ш/101).

Allergic contact sensitisation to polyester resin has been described by Liden et al. (5) in a boat-builder. Dooms-Goossens & de Jonge (6) mention 3 cases of polyester sensitivity, 2 of whom were plasterers and the 3rd an automobile-body repairman. Contact sensitivity amongst consumers appers to be rare, and this case of contact dermatitis to unsaturated polyester resin in a prosthesis is apparently unique. Another unusual feature is its appearance in a very young child.

Contact sensitivity to henna

The guinea pigs were dermally exposed to paraphenylene diamine (PPD) at a dose level of 0.1 ml day-1 of a 1.0% (w/v) solution of PPD for 1, 3, 5 and 7 days. The absorption of PPD and its effects on lipid peroxidation, glutathione, histamine and several enzymes were assessed in skin and serum. Histopathological changes in liver, kidney and skin were examined also. The findings of the study indicated that PPD exposure resulted in significantly increased levels of lipid peroxidation and histamine contents in skin. The activity of enzymes increased significantly in skin and serum. PPD exposure also showed degenerative changes in liver and hyperkeratosis together with infiltration of cells in the dermis. Biochemical defects and histopathological changes in skin and serum correlated with the duration of exposure.

Biochemical and histopathological changes following dermal exposure to paraphenylene diamine in guinea pigs.

Clinical, haematological and biochemical studies of 34 subjects, occupationally exposed to different types of pesticides, were conducted. The findings have been compared with those observed in 14 control subjects. Inhibition of cholinesterase activity was observed in the exposed group. Serum alkaline phosphatase was also found to be raised. Radiological examination revealed pneumonitic patches in the chest skiagrams of three exposed subjects. Paraesthesia with hyporeflexia was also found in 8.8% of exposed subjects. The findings suggest that exposure to multiple pesticides over many years affects the normal functioning of different organ systems and may produce characteristic clinical effects.

Vitallium is a cobalt alloy containing chromium and a low % of nickel; molybdenum, copper and vanadium can also be present (1). It is widely used for prosthetic devices of dynamic Goint replacement) or static (osteosynthesis screw) type. A 26-year-old woman presented with a 2-monthlong eczema of her neck, face, arms and thighs. 6 months ago, she had developed skin intolerance to certain metal objects (earrings and bracelets) that she had never worn before. 2 years before the onset of the cutaneous eruption, a fracture of her tibia had been fixed by means of a vitallium osteosynthesis screw. The skin overlying the implant had never shown any signs of dermatitis. Patch tests were performed with the GIRDCA standard series and with an orthopedic series, using Finn Chambers on Scanpor tape. The following positive reactions were seen at 3 days: potassium dichromate 0.5% pet.++ nickel sulphate 5.0% pet. + + cobalt chloride 1.0% pet. + + Removal of the screw was followed by clearance of the eczema. No relapse has been observed at a 2year follow-up. Allergic contact dermatitis due to osteosynthesis screws is rare (1-4). A localized dermatitis at the site of the implant is commoner than a generalized dermatitis (1). The eczema is usually long-lasting and can be cleared only by the removal of the screw (1-4). We consider that our patient developed metal allergy due to the implantation of the osteosynthesis screw, because she had no history of metal intolerance prior to the orthopedic procedure. Against this, it is widely known that allergy to chromium, cobalt and nickel can be induced by many common ubiquitous objects. Nevertheless, it seems unlikely that metals released by the orthopedic implant via the blood stream revealed a pre-existing subclinical metal sensitivity in our patient.
