The development of microwave-tube simulator suite (MTSS) is reported. MTSS is an integrated full-featured software package for microwave-tube analysis and design. It includes a friendly user-interface module and three physics simulators. Microwave-tube design environment is the user-interface module, which provides a powerful solid-modeling front end and graphical and computational postprocessing functionality. Electron optics simulator (EOS) is a fully 3-D finite-element design tool for microwave-tube electron guns and collectors. An EOS is used to design gridded guns, multibeam guns, and anisotropic collectors. A high-frequency circuit simulator is an advanced 3-D electromagnetic (EM) simulation tool for RF components, which has two solution methods based on a finite-integration technique and a finite-element method. Beam-wave interaction simulator (BWIS) is a design tool for electron beam and EM-wave interaction in microwave tubes. The 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D multifrequency nonlinear beam-wave interactions for helix traveling-wave tubes have been implemented in BWIS. The architecture, features, theory, and design of MTSS are presented.

Theory and Design of Microwave-Tube Simulator Suite

Predistortion linearization is a very effective technique for improving the linearity and efficiency of traveling wave tube (TWT) amplifiers. In this paper, we will study the effectiveness of predistortion techniques for TWT linearization using single-tone, two-tone, and quadrature-amplitude-modulation signals. The results from a series of predistortion linearization experiments for five TWTs covering L-, C-, Ku-, and Ka-bands and including both helix- and coupled-cavity TWTs will be presented. We will demonstrate the additional improvement of fifth-order predistortion linearization over the more commonly used third-order predistortion linearization. To circumvent the complexity and limited availability of a pure fifth-order linearizer, a technique for realizing nonlinear functions of order greater than or equal to five using cascaded third-order nonlinear functions is described. The technique can be used to efficiently generate higher order nonlinearities for predistortion linearization applications. We will demonstrate experimentally that the use of two cascaded third-order functions is comparable to a pure fifth-order implementation in performance.

TWTCAD integrated framework is a suite of helix TWT design software It is composed of five software and interface specification between software It includes: FemGun, a 2D gun software based on finite element method; HelixCT, a 2D helix circuit cold test software; BWI, 1D & 2D & 3D large signal software; MDCollector, a 2D multistage depressed collector design software; fPPM, magnet design software It has been validated against some TWTs and applied in microwave tube industry

Application and validation of the TWTCAD integrated framework

Recent developments to TWT Integrated Framework, a 2D modeling and simulation code suite for traveling wave tube, will be presented Two codes, UESTC_PPM and UESTC_DB, are added to TWTCAD. Existed another four codes are improved TWTCAD is applying and validating in microwave industry.

Recent Developments to TWTCAD Integrated Framework

Simulation codes are commonly used in the design and enhancement of TWT performance. A suite of TWT design codes developed under ONR-NRL sponsorship has been validated against 750 watt Ku-band communication TWTs manufactured by CPI (VTU-6397). The design code suite includes: MICHELLE, a 3D gun and collector code; CTLSS, a 3D cold test code; CHRISTIN, 1D & 3D large signal codes; and mPPM/lesPPM, magnet design code. The corresponding role of each code in TWT simulation is described in this paper.
