A low inductance three‐electrode spark source for the vacuum ultraviolet fed by a 20‐kV, 13‐μF capacitor is described. Its main feature is its ability to generate spectra of very high degrees of ionization. A 6‐kV spark produces spectra of CV and CVI as well as FeXVI, while a 17–18‐kV spark yields FeXVIII, AlXII, and AlXIII.

Measured collisional excitation rate coefficients for oxygen vii.

Initial measurements on the plasma produced in the Scylla IV theta‐pinch of its electron density, soft x‐ray emission, neutron emission, plasma shape and motion have been carried out as a function of the initial deuterium pressure and bias magnetic field. Interferograms establish electron densities in the range 4 to 7×1016 cm−3 for the plasma at peak compression and give azimuthally symmetric plasma shapes, which show the absence of the ``rotating flute'' instability as well as the absence of large trapped magnetic fields at peak compression. Streak photographs also indicate gross plasma stability. Shadowgraphs in conjunction with deflection mapping of a grid pattern show sharp plasma boundaries. Soft x‐ray absorption measurements yield plasma electron temperatures in the range 400 to 1200 eV, which are dependent on the magnitude of the reversed bias field and have a gross correlation with the neutron emission. Experimental Transition Probabilities for Triplet-Singlet Transitions in Heliumlike Heavy Ions

A new synthetic crystal, potassium acid phthalate (KAP), has a spacing between crystal planes, $2d=26.6$ \AA{}. The use of this crystal in a Bragg crystal spectrometer has permitted measurement of the Scylla I x-ray spectrum from 15 to 25 \AA{}, a region inaccessible with the beryl crystal previously used. The principal features of the observed spectrum in this region are the lines of O vii and O viii arising from oxygen contamination of the discharge by material from the ceramic discharge tube. Six lines of the resonance series of O vii are observed, including both $1{s}^{2}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}1s2p^{1}P_{1}$ and $1{s}^{2}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}1s2p^{3}P_{1}$. The first members of the Lyman series of O viii are also observed. Measurements of Doppler widths of the lines of O vii and O viii yield an oxygen-ion Doppler temperature of 9.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.8 keV. These measurements, when combined with those previously made on other ion species, show that the ions of the plasma are not in collisional equilibrium.

X-ray crystal spectroscopy of a theta-pinch plasma in the region 15-25a

A single-crystal time resolving x-ray emission spectrometer is described for study of x-ray spectra from the Scylla fast magnetic compression experiment. The Scylla sinusoidaily oscillating magnetic field achieves a value of 55 kgauss in 1.25 mu sec, producing a deuterium plasma. The spectra of O/sup VII//sup I/, NaX, Mg/sup XI/, Al/sup XII//sup I/, a nd Si/sup XII//sup I/ impurities are studied from 5 to 15A in D plasmas; in addition, the Nevin, a are studied for plasmas of 90% D and 10% Ne. During the half-cycle of decreasing magnetic field, an x-ray continuum is produced; the properties of this continuum, including the electron temperature, are studied. (auth)
