Neutron-rich, radioactive Zn isotopes were investigated at the Radioactive Ion Beam facility REX-ISOLDE (CERN) using low-energy Coulomb excitation. The energy of the 2(1)+ state in 78Zn could be firmly established and for the first time the 2+ --> 0(1)+ transition in 80Zn was observed at 1492(1) keV. B(E2,2(1)+ --> 0(1)+) values were extracted for (74,76,78,80)Zn and compared to large scale shell model calculations. With only two protons outside the Z=28 proton core, 80Zn is the lightest N=50 isotone for which spectroscopic information has been obtained to date. Two sets of advanced shell model calculations reproduce the observed B(E2) systematics. The results for N=50 isotones indicate a good N=50 shell closure and a strong Z=28 proton core polarization. The new results serve as benchmarks to establish theoretical models, predicting the nuclear properties of the doubly magic nucleus 78Ni.

Coulomb excitation of neutron-rich Zn isotopes: First observation of the 2(1)(+) state in Zn-80

The suppression of isobaric contaminations is of growing importance for many scientific programs using radioactive isotopes produced at isotope separation on-line (ISOL) facilities, such as ISOLDE-CERN A solid tungsten proton-to-neutron converter has been used for ten years to produce neutron-rich fission fragments from an UCx target while suppressing the production of neutron-deficient isobaric contaminants The remaining contamination is mainly produced by primary protons that are scattered by the heavy neutron converter and finally impinge on the UCx target itself Therefore, the knowledge of the energy-dependant cross-sections of proton and neutron induced fission events is crucial in order to evaluate future converter concepts In this paper, an improved neutron converter prototype design is presented together with the experimentally assessed radioisotope production of Rb, Zn, Cu, Ga and In that validate the converter concept aiming at beams of higher purity neutron-rich isotopes The experimentally derived release efficiencies for isotopes produced by the 14 GeV protons available at ISOLDE are used to evaluate the Monte Carlo code FLUKA and the cross-section codes TALYS and ABRABLA, respectively (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier BV

Experimental tests of an advanced proton-to-neutron converter at ISOLDE-CERN

The ISOLDE facility at CERN has been one of the leading isotope separator on-line (ISOL) facilities worldwide since it became operative in 1967. More than 1000 isotopes are available at ISOLDE, produced after the bombardment of various primary targets with a pulsed proton beam of energy 1.4 GeV and an average intensity of 2 μA. A tungsten solid neutron converter has been used for ten years to produce neutron-rich fission fragments in UCx targets. In this work, the Monte Carlo code FLUKA and the cross-section codes TALYS and ABRABLA were used to study the current layout of the neutron converter and fission target system of the ISOLDE facility. An optimized target system layout is proposed, which maximizes the production of neutron-rich isotopes and reduces the contamination by undesired neutron-deficient isobars. The studies here reported can already be applied to ISOLDE and will be of special relevance for the future facilities HIE-ISOLDE and EURISOL.

Optimization studies of the CERN-ISOLDE neutron converter and fission target system

This thesis presents nuclear spins, electromagnetic moments, and changes in the mean-square charge radii for radioactive gallium isotopes, and the latter two for the francium isotope 214Fr with additional α-decay spectroscopy. Measurements were made using the CRIS technique at the ISOLDE facility in CERN, facilitating some of the most sensitive nuclear structure studies on exotic nuclei to date. Where applicable, experimental results are compared to empirical, and LSSM calculations. The amalgamated data set has presented the opportunity of probing the sturdiness of three doubly-magic nuclei with respect to their local vicinities: 56Ni, 78Ni, and 208Pb. A magical 56Ni core is confirmed with an electromagnetic-moment analysis of 65,67,69Ga, albeit of a soft nature. Comparisons with shell model calculations not only confirm increased mixtures of π2p3/2/π1f5/2 configurations and the presence of neutron correlations towards N = 28, but they also highlight systematic trends with respect to the neighbouring odd-Z isotope chains. Analyses of neutron-rich species up to 82Ga reveal a rich collection of nuclearstructure effects: a gradual proton-occupation migration from π2p3/2 → π1f5/2 for the odd-A species which culminates in a ground-state spin reversal involving those spins at 81Ga, isomeric presence in 80Ga at N = 49, and a kink in the change in the mean-square charge radii for 82Ga at N = 51. Overall, this adds further evidence for a robust doubly magic 78Ni core. Measurements of 214Fr with t1/2 = 5 ms represents the shortest-lived isotope to have been measured with laser spectroscopy techniques at an online facility, in which the ISOL production mechanism is the limiting factor. With its g factor suggesting a relatively pure (π1h9/2 ⊗ ν2g9/2) configuration for I = 1− and a kink in its charge-radii value at N = 127, the magical effects of 208Pb can be observed five protons away.

Exploring the magical tenacity of doubly closed-core nuclei with gallium and francium isotopes

Radiological protection and nuclear engineering studies in multi-MW target systems

Intense radioactive ion beams of the neutron‐rich zinc isotopes 69–81Zn have been produced at the isotope separation on‐line facility ISOLDE at CERN. The combined use of spallation‐neutron induced fission of 238UCx targets and resonant laser ionization provided sufficient suppression of disturbing isobars (mainly gallium and rubidium) to perform decay spectroscopy up to 81Zn.

The study of the changes in the mean-square charge radius along the neutrondeficient polonium (Z = 84) isotopic chain with the rilis has been very successful. Data on 193 200,202,204 Po has been collected. Large deviation from the spherical droplet model have been observed for the most neutron-deficient isotopes. We propose to complete the systematics on the odd-A isotopes with the measurement of the hyperfine structure and isotope shifts of 201,203 Po, to reduce our systematic uncertainty having a greater overlap with previous data set by measuring the isotope shifts of 208,209,210 Po and finally to establish whether the shell effects beyond N = 126 are similar to those observed in lead and bismuth by measuring the isotope shifts of 211,211m,212m,216,217,218 Po. We also outline the required developments for a faster release of 192 Po, necessary to complete the original proposal. Altogether we require 24 shifts.
