A Berry phase is revealed for circularly polarized light when it is Bragg reflected by a chiral liquid-crystal medium of the same handedness. By using a chiral nematic layer we demonstrate that if the input plane of the layer is rotated with respect to a fixed reference frame, a geometric phase effect occurs for the circularly polarized light reflected by the periodic helical structure of the medium. Theory and numerical simulations are supported by an experimental observation, disclosing novel applications in the field of optical manipulation and fundamental optical phenomena.

Berry Phase of Light under Bragg Reflection by Chiral Liquid-Crystal Media

Throughout the whole history of liquid crystals science, the balancing of intrinsic elasticity with coupling to external forces has been the key strategy for most application and investigation. While the coupling of the optical field to the nematic director is at the base of a wealth of thoroughly described optical effects, a significant variety of geometries and materials have not been considered yet. Here we show that by adopting a simple cell geometry and measuring the optically induced birefringence, we can readily extract the twist elastic coefficient K22 of thermotropic and lyotropic chiral nematics (N*). The value of K22 we obtain for chiral doped 5CB thermotropic N* well matches those reported in the literature. With this same strategy, we could determine for the first time K22 of the N* phase of concentrated aqueous solutions of DNA oligomers, bypassing the limitations that so far prevented measuring the elastic constants of this class of liquid crystalline materials. The present study also enlightens the significant nonlinear optical response of DNA liquid crystals.

Non-linear optical measurement of the twist elastic constant in thermotropic and DNA lyotropic chiral nematics

Decelerating and stopping light is fundamental for optical processing, high performance sensor technologies and digital signal treatment, many of these applications relying on the ability of controlling the amplitude and phase of coherent light pulses. In this context, slow-light has been achieved by various methods, as coupling light into resonant media, Brillouin scattering in optical fibers, beam coupling in photorefractive and liquid crystal media or engineered dispersion in photonic crystals. Here, we present a different mechanism for slowing and storing light, which is based on photo-isomerization induced transparency of azo-dye molecules hosted in a chiral liquid crystal structure. Sharp spectral features of the medium absorption/dispersion, and the long population lifetime of the dye metastable state, enable the storage of light pulses with a significant retrieval after times much longer than the medium response time.

Optical phase conjugation and slow light are obtained in dye-doped chiral nematics via degenerate four-wave mixing. The creation of the light-induced dynamical grating is described and the amplitude of the phase-conjugate wave is shown to follow the changes of the input signal, hence providing efficient distortion correction. Associated to these capabilities, slowing down of light pulses is obtained thanks to the dispersive properties of the wave mixing occurring in the cholesteric liquid crystals, opening the way to applications in interferometry and imaging through highly scattering media.

Phase conjugation and slow light in dye-doped chiral nematics

Diffraction properties of photoinduced gratings recorded by overlapping two coherent beams at 532 nm in nematic liquid crystals doped with Disperse Red 1 were investigated with a probe beam at 632.8 nm. The grating was formed due to the alignment of dye molecules that leaded to the reorientation of the liquid crystal phase. The diffraction efficiency of the photoinduced grating was found to increase rapidly when the sample temperature was close to the clearing point in the nematic phase and a nearly 30-fold enhancement of the first-order diffraction efficiency was obtained. The pretransitional enhancement of the diffraction efficiency was discussed in terms of the reorientation of liquid crystals, optical nonlinearity effects and the onset of critical opalescence near the nematic-isotropic phase transition. Moreover, a peak shift of diffraction efficiency towards the lower temperature was observed with the increase of recording light intensity, which was attributed to laser induced photochemical disordering.

Enhanced diffraction properties of photoinduced gratings in nematic liquid crystals doped with Disperse Red 1.

Two-wave mixing in nematic liquid crystals doped with dyes and chiral agents is studied. The photo-induced spatial modulation of the chiral structure, together with the diffusion anisotropy of the mixture, determine a relatively fast response time, a spatial resolution of 1 μm, and a maximum gain for circularly polarized interacting beams. The gain is insensitive to changes in linear polarization, while it varies with the grating period and with the pump-to-signal intensity ratio.

The dynamic grating recording in dye-doped chiral nematic liquid crystals is studied. It is shown that the mechanism responsible for the grating recording can be ascribed to a photoinduced modification of the order parameter of a liquid crystal within the range of optical intensities, for which the orientational nonlinearity remains quenched by the structural order of the chiral structure. The two-wave mixing dynamic behavior is analyzed for different intensities of the recording beams, by comparing the self-diffraction regime with the probe diffraction. This allows us to distinguish a particular mechanism of optical nonlinearity. The photo-induced modulation of the order parameter and the respective changes of medium’s refractive indices determine the relatively fast response times, local nonlinear response, and quite high diffraction efficiency within an extremely wide intensity range (more than three orders of magnitude) The chiral helical structure hinders the nematic director reorientation, prevents the appearance of surface effects, and is very favorable for the manipulation of a nonlinear polarization. Such new mechanism could also be extended to the recording of arbitrary phase profiles as requested in several applications for the manipulation of a light-beam.
