Coral reefs, vital and ecologically significant ecosystems, are among the most jeopardized marine environments in the Atlantic Ocean, particularly along the northeastern coast of Brazil. The persistent lack of effective management and conservation has led to fragmented information on reef use and pressures, hindering the understanding of these ecosystems' health. Major difficulties and challenges include inadequate data, diverse anthropogenic pressures, and the complex interaction between marine species. This study sought to bridge this knowledge gap by conducting a comprehensive analysis of marine diversity and anthropogenic pressures, specifically focusing on Seixas coral reef near João Pessoa city, an area notably impacted by tourism. Utilizing 25 monitoring transects, subdivided into 1 m2 quadrants, the marine diversity was meticulously evaluated through innovative procedures including (a) sedimentological and geochemical field surveys, (b) application of Shannon-Weaver diversity and Simpson dominance indices, (c) cluster analysis, (d) species identification of macroalgae, coral, and fish, and (e) an examination of anthropogenic interactions and pressures on the coral reef. The assessment encompassed three distinct zones: Back Reef, Reef Top, and Fore Reef, and identified a total of 25 species across 15 genera and 10 fish families. The findings revealed the prevalence of brown macroalgae, fish, and coral, with heightened abundance of red macroalgae in the Fore Reef, which also exhibited the greatest diversity (2.816) and dominance (0.894). Original achievements include the identification of specific spatial variations, recognition of the anthropogenic factors leading to ecological changes, and the formulation of evidence-based recommendations. The study concludes that escalating urbanization and burgeoning daily tourist visits to the reef have exacerbated negative impacts on Seixas coral reef's marine ecosystem. These insights underscore the urgent need for strategic planning and resource management to safeguard the reef's biodiversity and ecological integrity.

To unravel the effects of environmental factors on fishery resources in the bay, we conducted six biological and environmental surveys in the Laizhou Bay between 2013 and 2020. The findings of our study illuminated several key aspects: (1) The annual discharge of water and sediment from the Yellow River to Laizhou Bay exhibited notable variations, while concurrently, environmental factors including temperature, salinity, and suspended particle matter underwent fluctuations, yet remained within a relatively stable range overall. (2) A total of 8318 eggs and larvae belonging to 10 orders, 16 families, and 19 genera were collected. Significant interannual fluctuations had been documented in the species composition, abundance, and biodiversity of ichthyoplankton. Notably, both Shannon-Wiener diversity index and Pielou evenness index were significantly negatively correlated with suspended particle matter concentration. (3) The water and sediment discharge significantly positively correlated with the number of cold-temperature species. However, the sediment input negatively correlated with the number of continental shelf benthopelagic fish. (4) Redundancy and correlation analyses confirmed the strong link between spatial and temporal distribution of fish communities and environmental factors, with salinity and dissolved oxygen key for ichthyoplankton abundance. Our research offers a scientific foundation for targeted fishery protection and management, which is crucial for preserving the ecological functions of spawning grounds in the bay.

There is no single correct or optimal scale for describing spatial landscape heterogeneity. However, since landscape patterns are scale-dependent, using different scales in the analysis may result in different outcomes, which can affect landscape management options. The main goal of our research was to identify the most adequate GIS solution for converting vector data to raster data while keeping the spatial continuity of most linear features and input land cover data as detailed as possible. In addition, to compare our database with the CORINE Land Cover data approach, we used 3 different rasterization methods and raster data with 100- and 50-m pixel sizes, first, to match the geometric accuracy of the CORINE Land Cover data and second, to compare the calculation results acquired with the higher-resolution rasterized BDOT10k data. We found that it was possible to compare these methods and assess how much data resolution and selection of rasterization methods affected the calculations of the landscape metrics. The calculation results of specific fragmentation metrics differed tremendously when higher data resolutions and rasterization methods were used, especially when using the custom priority rasterization method.
