TL;DR: It is suggested that the elevated cytokine levels indicate activation of the immune system in individuals who were previously asthmatic, but recovered, and are now symptom free and in their children with nonasthmatic bronchial hyperreactivity.

Role of TNF-α and its 55 and 75 kDa receptors in bronchial hyperreactivity
TL;DR: The provocation doses of methacholine causing a 20% reduction in forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV 1) were found to be in a significant negative linear correlation with TNF α, sTNF-R1 and R2 levels in hyperreactive adults and with T NF α , sT NF-R2 inhyperreactive children.
