Patients delay in seeking care increases the transmission of pulmonary tuberculosis and hence the burden of the disease. This study investigates the pattern and determinants of patients delay in seeking treatment among pulmonary tuberculosis cases attending a Government Chest Clinic in Ibadan, Nigeria. A descriptive cross sectional study was employed. A face to face interview of 102 newly diagnosed tuberculosis patients at the clinic was conducted using a structured questionnaire . The mean age of respondents was 45.4 ±13.5 years and 61(59.8%) were females. The overall median delay in seeking treatment among study subjects was 60 days (range 3 to 180 days), with 61.8% patients delaying for more than 30 days. Binary logistic regression model showed that female sex (OR=5.3), place of residence (OR=3.9), outside Ibadan vs. within Ibadan), age group >45 vs. ≤45 years (OR=2.4) and reported stigma (OR=7.6) were significantly associated with longer patients delay. The results showed that delay among patients in seeking care is common and some groups of patients may be experiencing problems in seeking care in our environment.

Determinants of patient delay in seeking treatment among pulmonary tuberculosis cases in a government specialist hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria

The objectives of this study were to examine self-rated health status and health care-seeking behaviour of Jamaicans, and to ascertain the socio-economic determinants of health careseeking behaviour as well as good health status. To that end, a cross-sectional descriptive study of 1,006 respondents who answered the question on health-seeking behaviour was used, and this was extracted from a larger nationally representative probability sampling survey of 6,783 Jamaicans. Descriptive statistics were used to provide background information on the demographic characteristics of the sample, chi-square was used to examine correlation between two non-metric variables, and logistic regressions were employed to establish the predictors of health care-seeking behaviour and good self-rated health status. Of the sample, 40.5% was men and 59.5% women, with a mean age of 41.8 years (SD=27.6 years). Forty-four percent of the sample reported at least good health, 97% claimed that they have had some form of dysfunction; 6% reported being injured due to accidents, and only 11% indicated that their illness was not diagnosed by a health practitioner. Of those who indicated being diagnosed with a recurring ailment, 5.6% had arthritis, 20.5% hypertension, 12.4% diabetes mellitus, 9.5% asthma and 14.9% cold. Only 65.4% of the sample sought health care. In the multivariate analyses, health-care seeking behaviour of Jamaicans can be explained by age of respondents (OR=1.031, 95%CI=1.014, 1.049); area of residence (other towns OR=0.5, 95%CI=0.278, 0.902); log consumption (OR=3.605 95%CI=1.814, 7.167); marital status (married OR=0.468 95%CI=0.260, 0.843; divorced, separated or widowed, OR=0.383, 95% CI 0.163, 0.903) and social class (Upper class OR=0.319, 95%CI=0.106, 0.958). The health status of those who seek health care can be predicted duration of the individuals to carry out their normal activities (OR=0.594, 95%CI=0.413, 0.855); age of respondents (OR=0.967, 95%CI=0.949, 0.986) and area of residence (urban area OR=2.415, 1.195, 4.881; other towns OR=2.514, 1.162, 5.442). Self-rated health status was found to be a significant statistical predictor of self-reported dysfunction - good self-rated health status with reference to poor self-rated health status (OR=0.271, 95%CI=0.081, 0.915). This relationship disappears when socio-demographic characteristics were included. The findings of this study suggests that health service professionals need to increase awareness about the benefits of purchasing prescribed medication, and that this must be more so for rural and urban residents.

Socio-demographic determinants of Health care-seeking behaviour, selfreported illness and Self-evaluated Health status in Jamaica

Objectives: The objective was to assess the self-medication patterns and drug use behavior in housewives belonging to the middle income group in a city of Haryana State in Northern India. Materials and Methods: A detailed questionnaire designed to assess the self-medication patterns and drug use behavior and interview technique was used to elicit the requisite information. One hundred housewives of the middle income group were interviewed in Rohtak. Results: Most of the housewives were in the habit of keeping the medicines though only 73% of them were in the habit of using it without any prescription. Also it was seen that those housewives who were taking self-medication were better educated than those not indulged in self-medication. All of them were using allopathic drugs on a regular basis while other modes of medications were less used. The self-medication was most commonly based on the previous prescriptions issued by the doctors followed by the suggestions from friends, advertisement on the television, and newspapers. For most of them the reasons for self-medication were financial restraints and lack of time to go to the medical practitioner. Conclusions: The study delineates the difference in the self-medication patterns and drug use behavior in housewives in a city of Northern India. The results emphasize the need for comprehensive measures for intervention strategies to promote rational drug therapy by improving prescribing patterns and influencing self-medication.

Self-medication patterns and drug use behavior in housewives belonging to the middle income group in a city in northern India.

A population based cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the awareness, attitude, and treatment seeking behaviour regarding TB in rural Tamil Nadu. Out of 1985 people interviewed, 56% had heard of TB, but 80% were not aware of the cause and mode of spread of TB. Television was reported to be the main source of information (45%). Only 34% people were aware that treatment for TB was available free of cost. Less than 10% people felt the need to maintain confidentiality, if contracted TB. More than 80% people preferred to visit Government hospital, if developed TB, whereas 54% actually sought treatment from government hospital for cough of more than three weeks.

Awareness, attitude and treatment seeking behaviour regarding tuberculosis in a rural area of Tamil Nadu.

This study was conducted to access the health seeking behaviours among Myanmar migrant workers in Ranong Province, Thailand. The data was collected using a structured questionnaire to 388 Myanmar migrant workers during February 2009. Buying drugs from a drug store is the most common health seeking behaviours for the perceived minor health problems while going to the health centers for major health problems. Half of them stated they would go to the health centers only when their conditions get worse. Individual characteristics such as gender, occupation, registration status and place of resident were significantly associated with the going to the health centers with the p-values of 0.038, <0.001, 0.043 and <0.001 respectively. There also were significant associations between going to the health centers and accessibility to the healthcare services such as presence of health insurance, time taken to travel to the health centers and consultation fees (p-values 0.007, 0.001 and 0.004 respectively). Among the health centers, private clinics were preferred more than Government hospital and NGO clinics. Providing more health insurances and information on the coverage and benefits of them would be beneficial. Training and regular supervision of the drug stores are needed. Further studies of health seeking behaviours in other working groups and those who are not working should be carried out. Qualitative study on why migrants prefer the private clinics should also be undertaken.
