Optical packet switching (OPS) can enhance the performance of data center networks (DCNs)by providing fast and large-capacity switching capability. Benefiting from the software-defined networking (SDN) control plane, which could update the look-up-table (LUT) of the OPS, virtual DCNs can be flexibly created and reconfigured. In this work, we have implemented and assessed an SDN-based control framework for an OPS node, where the OpenFlow protocol has been extended in support of the OPS switching paradigm. Application flows are switched by the OPS at submicrosecond hardware speed, decoupled from the slower (millisecond timescale) SDN control operation. By the DCN infrastructure provider, the virtual networks become directly programmable with the abstraction of the underlying OPS node. Experimental results validate the successful setup of virtual network slices for intra-data center interconnect and quality of service (QoS) guarantee for high-priority application flows. Data plane resources are efficiently shared by exploiting statistical multiplexing. In addition, the capability of exposing per-port OPS traffic statistics information to the SDN controller enables the implementation and experimental validation of load balancing algorithms to improve the QoS performance.

SDN-enabled OPS with QoS guarantee for reconfigurable virtual data center networks

Driven by the cloud computing, internet of things, and emerging big-data applications, more stringent requirements in terms of high bandwidth, low latency and large interconnectivity are imposed on the communications within the data centers. Traditional intradata center network based on electronic switches is organized in a hierarchical topology, which is affected by the communication bottleneck and poor power efficiency. Architectural and technological innovations are desired, in order to enable the scalable growth both in the number of connected endpoints and exchanged traffic volume. Transparent optical switching has been considered as an attractive technology in this respect, providing data-rate and data-format agnostic operation, and meantime eliminating the power consuming transceivers as well as formatdependent interfaces. The research work described in this thesis first focuses on the design, implementation and assessment of a high-capacity and scalable fast optical switch node. These activities are carried out in the framework of EU FP7 project LIGHTNESS, targeting for the demonstration of a high-performance and programmable optical data center network. The fast optical switch is a key element in the data plane which is utilized to effectively cope with the burst-like data center traffic. The parallel processing of the RF tone label, the distributed control resulted from the modular structure, and the nanoseconds operation of the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) gate allow for nanoseconds reconfiguration time of the switch to support statistically multiplexed traffic. An optical flow control mechanism employing bidirectional transmission of the in-band label and flow control signal has been proposed and investigated. For the packet contended at the optical switch, fast retransmission of the electrically stored copy is realized, mitigating the issue of lack of the optical buffer in a closed environment like data center network. Moreover, to facilitate the flexible provisioning and configuration of the network enabled from the software-defined networking (SDN)-based control scheme, a dedicated SDNenabled control interface has been developed for the fast optical switch node. [ANGLES] This thesis reports the outcome of the joint collaboration I made with the ECO department in the Electrical Engineering faculty of the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) during my stay in the Netherlands in the framework of the Erasmus interchange Program. The main goal was developing a software (from now on, the Agent) that will, on one hand, control and manage the FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) which are part of an Optical Packet Switch prototype, and on the other hand communicate for the first time a switch like that with an external entity called Controller through the OpenFlow protocol so that it can be eventually integrated in a SDN Data Centre. This report has two purposes: to present the problem I was trying to solve by creating the software mentioned and also that this document could be used as a comprehensive manual in order to be able to use and/or further extend the tool developed.
