Statistical models for estimating lamb birth weight using body measurements

The study aimed to identify the relationship between body measurements and the weight of sheep and goats. A total of 324 heads of sheep and 261 heads of goats were used. Measuring of body weight (BWt) and body measurements as heart girth (HG), height at wither (HW) and body length (BL) were taken on both types of animals for 3 successive months. Correlations between body weight and measurements were tested. Linear and non-linear regressions of body weight on the most correlated body measurements were calculated. HG, HW and BL were significantly related to BWt. HG had the largest correlation coefficient. Power regression had the highest coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.91) and lowest error of estimate (SE = 7.42). The power regression model (BWt = 0.0006*HG2.5608) was tested against the actual weight of another animal’s population of 119 heads of goats and 171 heads of sheep using paired t-test analysis. No significant variation was observed between the actual and estimated body weights. The model overestimated weight by 1.5%. It was concluded that body weight could be estimated with a high accuracy using the corrected model BWt (kg) = (0.0006*(HG2.5608))–(1.5*(0.0006*(HG2.5608)/100)). 

Prediction of body weight using body measurements in some sheep and goats in Qatar

Rabbit raring in Kenya is a steadily growing industry which is contributing towards enhancing household food security and income of resource poor farmers. Relationship between body weight  and eight biometric traits (ear length, tail length, nose-to-shoulder length, chest circumference, thigh circumference, abdominal circumference, body length and rump width) was determined in 430 rabbits comprising 255 females and 175 males using path analysis. The animals were randomly sampled from thirteen counties in Kenya. Pair-wise correlations among body weights and linear body measurements were positive and highly significant (r = 0.250-0.703; P 0.05) while nose-to-shoulder length had negative direct effect, hence these variables were excluded from the final regression model. The final regression equation of the male rabbits included ear length, tail length, chest circumference, thigh circumference and body length with a coefficient of determination (R 2 ) of 0.636. Path analysis for the female rabbits showed highest direct effects was realized via chest circumference followed by body length then ear length in that order. The direct effect of tail length, abdominal circumference and rump width were not significant (P>0.05) while nose-to-shoulder length had a negative direct effect on body weight, hence all these variables were excluded from the final regression model. The final regression equation for the female rabbits included ear length, chest circumference and body length with a coefficient of determination (R 2 ) of 0.567. The prediction coefficients obtained in this study could therefore be used in weight estimation and breeding programs to improve meat production in rabbits. Assessment of Relationship Between Body Weight and Biometric Traits Using Path Analysis in Kenyan Domesticated Rabbits

Abstract. The objective of this study was to develop statistical models to predict body weight from goat’s body measurements. Data on 1702 goats for circumferences of chest (CG), abdominal circumference (AC) and spiral circumference (SC), height at withers (WH), body length (BL), and body weight (BW) were analysed to study the relationship between linear body measurements and body weight. The present study revealed that in the goats from all breeds studied (Arabia, Makatia, Kabyle, M’zabite, Saanen and Alpine), the weight evolved in the same direction and at the same rate as the linear measurements chosen. The linear measurements were all significantly correlated with animal weight (p<0.001). Results indicated that Arabia goats had the highest WH (71.07 cm) and CG (17.72 cm). The highest measurements were reported in Alpine goats for AC (97.73 cm), BL (78.05 cm), SC (106.29 cm) and BW (41.60 kg). The Kabyle breed were recorded with the lowest values for the WH (64.95 cm), BL (67.58 cm) and BW (29.52 kg). The average live weight was 38.15±10.90 kg with differences according to age, sex and breed (Arabia, Makatia, Kabyle and M’Zabite). Positive and highly significant (p<0.001) correlations were observed between BW and the majority of independent variables. The highest relationship was illustrated between CG with BW (r=0.922). Linear regression analyses were performed to develop the models. The simple regression analysis found all parameters to be significant (p<0.001) (WH, BL, CG, AC and CS) and CG gave more precision on the weight when using a single measurement parameter (R2 varied between 0.950 and 0.967). Therefore, the following formula can be used to estimate the live weight of the animals using only the chest circumference (P=75*CG). The development of these equations would enable producers and researchers to predict the animal body weight and develop strategic plans for the relevant goat herds.

Statistical models based on morphometric traits for live body weight estimation in goats

Data on body weight and body measurements (body length, height at withers, chest girth and paunch girth) of adult Kilakarsal sheep have been collected from 124 adult animals managed at the farmers filed in Tirunelveli districts of Tami Nadu, India to estimate the body weight from body measurements. The data were subjected to standard statistical analysis using SPSS software and linear regression analysis was appliedby keeping the body weight as the dependant variables and different body measurements as independent variables. The overall means (±SE) for body weight, body length and height at withers, chest girth and paunch girth of Kilakarsal sheep pooled over sexes were 23.39 ±0.33 kg, 56.92 ±0.31 cm, 69.74 ± 0.33 cm, 71.92 ±0.44 cm and 69.44 ± 0.49 cm, respectively. The Pearson correlation coefficient between body weight with body length, height at withers, chest girth and paunch girth were 0.525, 0.531, 0.831 and 0.761, respectively. The R2 values for the regression equation, considering individual independent variables viz.body length, height at withers, chest girth and paunch girth were 0.276, 0.282, 0.691 and 0.579, respectively. The highest R2 value was obtained from chest girth variable followed by paunch girth. The R2 values increased with the addition of independent variables in the equation and the maximum R2 value was obtained as 0.783 from all the variables. The study revealed that the chest girth is the best predictor for the estimation of body weight and this alone contributed 69.1 per cent variation in the body weight of adult Kilakarsal sheep.
