Phytochemical investigation, in vitro and in vivo antioxidant properties of aqueous and organic extracts of toxic plant: Atractylis gummifera L.

Introduction The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of herbal medicine use by patients hospitalized or consultant in the nephrology department of University Hospital center Hassan II Fez, the reasons of this use, to identify socio-demographic characteristics, and the etiology of kidney disease related to herbal medicine use, also the most used plants. Method Cross-sectional study on the use of herbal medicine conducted at the nephrology department of University Hospital Center Hassan II Fez, Morocco. During 6 months between August 2015 and February 2016. Patients older than 15 years (n = 471) with varying degrees of kidney disease were included. The questionnaire contained questions related to socio-demographic data, the use of plants, knowledge about herbal medicine toxicity, and etiology of KD. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze socio-demographic characteristics related to herbal medicine use. Results A total of 471 patients responded; the prevalence of herbal medicine use was 50.7%. Herbal medicine users were more likely to be males (OR 0.43; 95%CI 0.25–0.74); unemployed (OR 0.51; 95%CI 0.29–0.89), with unknown etiology (OR 0.43; 95%CI 0.22–0.84). Reasons of use were: belief in its efficacy (74%), easy access to medicinal herbal medicine (70%), and lower cost (48%). The most commonly used herbal medicine were Rosmarinus officinalis L.; Origanum compactum Benth; Artemisia herba-alba Asso and Mentha pulegium L. Potentially harmful herbal medicine included Aristolochia longa. Conclusions The prevalence of herbal medicine use is high among patients with kidney disease in nephrology department.

Prevalence of herbal medicine use among patients with kidney disease: A cross-sectional study from Morocco.

Background : The central Middle Atlas is a region renowned for its wealth of medicinal plants and ancestral knowledge of its local population in traditional pharmacopoeia. Thus, the main aim of this study is the valorization of poisonous medicinal plants and to provide an overview on the state of plant biodiversity of toxic medicinal plants, recommended by the actors of traditional medicine in this region Methods : The survey carried out involving actors of traditional medicine in the central Middle Atlas made it possible to establish a list of toxic medicinal plants recommended by these actors. A field survey was then conducted in order to identify the plants inventoried in the different sites of the study area, for taxonomic confirmation and /or determination. Results : Ethnobotanical survey allowed us to identify 123 medicinal plants used. Of these, 83 are declared toxic. The floristic prospection of these 83 toxic medicinal plants revealed that the majority of these plants are spontaneous herbaceous, with a rate of endemism of 8.34%. In addition, these plants are grouped into 74 genera and distributed over 36 families, of which the most represented are Lamiaceae (15.66%) and Asteraceae (14.46%). Also, the study revealed that Anacyclus pyrethrum L., Aristolochia paucinervis Pomel and Urtica urens L. are the most toxic plants used therapeutically. Moreover, the results show that for some plants, the most toxic parts are the most recommended by practitioners of traditional medicine in the study area, generally with internal use. Thus, the risks of poisoning are indisputable and accentuated by the recorded cases of confusion. Conclusion : The Middle Atlas is a region known for its flora biodiversity and especially for poisonous medicinal plants. The uncontrolled use of these plants can lead to sequelae and possibly serious intoxications. Keywords : Floristic prospecting, toxic medicinal plants, Central Middle Atlas, phytotherapy.

Biodiversity of poisonous medicinal plants solicited in the traditional phytotherapy of the central Middle Atlas -Morocco-

According to the World Health Organization, 80% of the population in developing countries is engaged in traditional medicine Consequently, the issue of poisoning by plants is not negligible The objective of this study is to evaluatethe therapeutic and toxicological knowledge of herbalists of the most reported plants in the anti-poison center of Morocco Field study by direct interview with 20 herbalists of the Rabat-Temara region to assess their therapeutic and toxicological knowledge of the most reported plants in the anti-poison center of Morocco, as well as the conditions of their sale, through a questionnaire A total of 20 herbalists were accepted to participate in the study Not all of them had a herbalist certificate and only two knew all the plants studied The most recommended plant by herbalists to their clientele was Atractylis gummifera Although the law prohibits the possession and sale of any toxic plant, the availability of these plants to the herbalists surveyed varies between 100% for A gummifera and 0% for Hyoscyamus falezlez None of the herbalists received notifications of cases of intoxication Although the therapeutic knowledge of herbalists was well advanced, their toxicological knowledge was not, so we note that the majority of herbalists did not know with precision the possible side effects of the plants sold, or how they could be used safely Although plants have real and beneficial effects, they are not devoid of side effects that can sometimes be fatal; hence the need to focus on regulation of the functions of the herbalist

Evaluation of the therapeutic and toxicological knowledge of herbalists on the most notified plants in the poison control and pharmacovigilance center of Morocco

Atractylis gummifera L. or glue thistle is a plant of Mediterranean region belonging to the Asteraceae’s family; it is used in traditional pharmacopeia. It is characterized by the production of two highly toxic metabolites called atractyloside and carboxyatractyloside responsible for frequent and mortal poisonings in the absence of fast and effective treatment. The objective of our work is to make a contribution to a botanical and chemical study of glu Thistle, and make the various elements of diagnosis which allow easy identification of this toxic plant and avoid confusion. Examinations focused on the rhizome which is drugs. Botanical analysis is revealed the characters of this plant: herb acaule rod, the spiny leaves, a fleshy large pivot rhizome, white latex flow. It appears clearly many laticifers and crystals of inulin during the microscopic analysis of the cutting of the rhizome. Also, the analysis chemical reveal the presence of polyphénols such as (flavones, flavonols, anthocyanins),tannin and its wealth of toxic glycosides atractyloside.It was revealed by colorimetric reactions and chromatography technique (TLC and HPLC). We also hope that this contribution will be more enriched in the future.

Cette plante est veneneuse, a tropisme hepatique et constitue un veritable probleme de sante publique pour la population infantile. A travers cette observation, nous faisons un point sur cette intoxication, dont le diagnostic est clinique, le traitement est symptomatique et la prevention cruciale.
