We present a catalogue of 73,221 white dwarf candidates extracted from the astrometric and photometric data of the recently published Gaia DR2 catalogue. White dwarfs were selected from the Gaia Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with the aid of the most updated population synthesis simulator. Our analysis shows that Gaia has virtually identified all white dwarfs within 100 pc from the Sun. Hence, our sub-population of 8,555 white dwarfs within this distance limit and the colour range considered, $-\,0.52<(G_{\rm BP}-G_{\rm RP})<0.80$, is the largest and most complete volume-limited sample of such objects to date. From this sub-sample we identified 8,343 CO-core and 212 ONe-core white dwarf candidates and derived a white dwarf space density of $4.9\pm0.4\times10^{-3}\,{\rm pc^{-3}}$. A bifurcation in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram for these sources, which our models do not predict, is clearly visible. We used the Virtual Observatory tool VOSA to derive effective temperatures and luminosities for our sources by fitting their spectral energy distributions, that we built from the UV to the NIR using publicly available photometry through the Virtual Observatory. From these parameters, we derived the white dwarf radii. Interpolating the radii and effective temperatures in hydrogen-rich white dwarf cooling sequences, we derived the surface gravities and masses. The Gaia 100 pc white dwarf population is clearly dominated by cool ($\sim$ 8,000 K) objects and reveals a significant population of massive ($M \sim 0.8 M_{\odot}$) white dwarfs, of which no more than $\sim$ $30-40 \%$ can be attributed to hydrogen-deficient atmospheres, and whose origin remains uncertain.

A white dwarf catalogue from Gaia-DR2 and the Virtual Observatory

We present the discovery and characterization of a radio-bright binary in the Galactic globular cluster M10. First identified in deep radio continuum data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, M10-VLA1 has a flux density of $27\pm4$ $\mu$Jy at 7.4 GHz and a flat to inverted radio spectrum. Chandra imaging shows an X-ray source with $L_X \approx 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ matching the location of the radio source. This places M10-VLA1 within the scatter of the radio--X-ray luminosity correlation for quiescent stellar-mass black holes, and a black hole X-ray binary is a viable explanation for this system. The radio and X-ray properties of the source disfavor, though do not rule out, identification as an accreting neutron star or white dwarf system. Optical imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope and spectroscopy from the SOAR telescope show the system has an orbital period of 3.339 d and an unusual "red straggler" component: an evolved star found redward of M10's red giant branch. These data also show UV/optical variability and double-peaked H$\alpha$ emission characteristic of an accretion disk. However, SOAR spectroscopic monitoring reveals that the velocity semi-amplitude of the red straggler is low. We conclude that M10-VLA1 is most likely either a quiescent black hole X-ray binary with a rather face-on ($ i < $ 4$^{\circ}$) orientation or an unusual flaring RS CVn-type active binary, and discuss future observations that could distinguish between these possibilities.

The MAVERIC Survey: A Red Straggler Binary with an Invisible Companion in the Galactic Globular Cluster M10

We study the prospect of the Gaia satellite to identify black hole binary systems by detecting the orbital motion of the companion stars. Taking into account the initial mass function, mass transfer, common envelope phase, interstellar absorption and identifiability of black holes, we estimate the number of black hole binaries detected by Gaia and their distributions with respect to the black hole mass for several models with different parameters. We find that $\sim 200-1000$ black hole binaries will be detected by Gaia during its 5 years operation. The shape of distribution function of the black hole mass is affected most severely by the relation between the zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) stellar mass and the black hole mass in parameters adopted in this paper, which implies that black holes detected with Gaia enables us to constrain the mass relation.

Detecting Black Hole Binaries by Gaia

The evolution of white dwarfs is a simple gravothermal process of cooling. Since the shape of their luminosity function is sensitive to the characteristic cooling time, it is possible to use its slope to test the existence of additional sources or sinks of energy, such as those predicted by alternative physical theories. The aim of this paper is to study if the changes in the slope of the white dwarf luminosity function around bolometric magnitudes ranging from 8 to 10 and previously attributed to axion emission are, effectively, a consequence of the existence of axions and not an artifact introduced by the star formatio rate. We compute theoretical luminosity functions of the thin and thick disk, and of the stellar halo including axion emission and we compare them with the existing observed luminosity functions. Since these stellar populations have different star formation histories, the slope change should be present in all of them at the same place if it is due to axions or any other intrinsic cooling mechanism. The signature of an unexpected cooling seems to be present in the luminosity functions of the thin and thick disks, as well as in the halo luminosity function. This additional cooling is compatible with axion emission, thus supporting the idea that DFSZ axions, with a mass in the range of 4 to 10 meV, could exist. If this were the case, these axions could be detected by the future solar axioscope IAXO.

Axions and the luminosity function of white dwarfs: the thin and thick discs, and the halo

In astrometric binaries, the presence of a dark, unseen star can be inferred from the gravitational pull it induces on its luminous binary companion. While the orbit of such binaries can be characterized with precise astrometric measurements, constraints made from astrometry alone are not enough to measure the component masses. In this work, we determine the precision with which Gaia can astrometrically measure the orbits and -- with additional observations -- the component masses, for luminous stars hosting hidden companions. Using realistic mock Gaia observations, we find that Gaia can precisely measure the orbits of binaries hosting hidden brown-dwarfs out to tens of pc and hidden white dwarf and neutron star companions at distances as far as several hundred pc. Heavier black hole companions may be measured out to 1 kpc or farther. We further determine how orbital period affects this precision, finding that Gaia can characterize orbits with periods as short as 10 days and as long as a few 10$^3$ days, with the best measured orbits having periods just short of Gaia's mission lifetime. Extending Gaia's nominal five-year mission lifetime by an additional five years not only allows for the measurement of longer period orbits, but those longer period binaries can be seen at even greater distances.
