Design of adaptive optics by interference fitting: Theoretical background

Shrink fitted joints can fail due to creep, especially when they are subjected to high temperatures. Creep strain can reduce the contact stress produced by the interference fit and loosen the fit joint. This phenomenon is very common in rotating turbines, gears, bearings, and rings, when these components are exposed to elevated temperatures. This paper presents an analytical model that describes stresses and strain in a plastically deformed shrink-fitted assembly, consisting of a solid shaft and a cylindrical hub under creep. The developed model is used to estimate the distribution of stresses and creep strain in a plastically deformed interference fit and their change over time, as creep takes place. It also predicts the change in the contact pressure and the variation of radial and circumferential stresses for different hub radii over time. The creep analysis uses Norton’s law. The results of the analytical model were graphically compared to those obtained by the finite element method (FEM), using a general-purpose FEM software.

Creep Analysis of Plastically Deformed Shrink-Fitted Joints

The paper is devoted to the description of the problem statement, the modeling approach, and the obtained results on the creep of a thick tube when it is in contact with rods of semi-cylindrical cross-section, which are located symmetrically to its center. An overview of research papers made in the direction of creep contact modeling, including the FEM use, is presented. The formulation of the problem is presented taking into account finite strains and displacements. The contact conditions are described, the variational functional used for the finite element formulation of the problem is presented. Due to the existing symmetry of the geometric parameters and boundary conditions of the problem, it was solved using the plane strain statement. The area of FEM discretization is the fourth part of the tube cross-section, which is in contact with the cross-section of the rod in the form of a half circle. The results of verification studies performed to assess the reliability of solving the creep problem for the cylinder loaded with internal pressure are presented. Different models are discussed for describing the contact interaction, which can be used in the ANSYS software. The advantages of using the Normal Lagrange Method are shown. The tube contact deformation during creep for 10,000 hours was analyzed. The distributions of the components of the stress-strain state obtained by computer modeling along the sections of the contacting elements and the plot of the redistribution of von Mises equivalent stress at the point of contact are presented. The characteristics obtained by calculations of the deformed state of the surface of the cylindrical tube, which arises due to the influence of the contacting rod, are discussed. An approximation was made and analytical expressions of the dependence of the von Mises stress and the length of the contact line on time were presented. The obtained results of solving the creep problem indicate that within approximately 1.25 years due to the contact of the tube with the rods, dent-type defects are formed on its surface.

The paper proposes a significant improvement in the integrated methodology for automated calculation and selection of interference fits. The study’s main task was to find a rational combination of the values of the variable parameters of the complex mathematical model of the area of existence of the fit. The specified search was carried out in the range of a finite set of permissible parameter values that correspond to the conditions for calculating the fit. As an effective tool for performing a large volume of numerical and analytical calculations, the author’s computer program for the automated design of interference fit was used. The research object was the geometric image of the model of the area of existence of the fit parameters in the form of a three-dimensional body as part of the complex of a multiparametric mathematical model. For solving this problem, one of the projections of the model of the area of existence of fit parameters is described analytically based on the theory of R-functions. In the research process, the influence of the fit diameter’s value (the main geometric characteristic of the fit) on the quality and reliability of the shroud joint during its thermal assembly and during the operation was determined. The research results are recommended for improving the mathematical and software tools for computer-aided design of interference fits when choosing the most rational design solution for the given operating conditions and assembly of the joint.
