Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

We describe the design and performance of a ZnO nanowire-based dye-sensitized solar cell. ZnO nanowires with a branched structure were employed as the wide-band-gap semiconductor to construct dye-sensitized solar cells which exhibit energy conversion efficiencies of 0.5% with internal quantum efficiencies of 70%. The nanowires provide a direct conduction path for electrons between the point of photogeneration and the conducting substrate and may offer improved electron transport compared to films of sintered nanoparticles. The devices have light harvesting efficiencies under 10%, indicating that current densities and efficiencies can be improved by an order of magnitude by increasing the nanowire surface area.

Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) offers an efficient and easily implemented technology for future energy supply. Compared to conventional silicon solar cells, it provides comparable power conversion efficiency (PCE) at low material and manufacturing costs. DSSC materials such as titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) are inexpensive, abundant and innocuous to the environment. Since DSSC materials are less prone to contamination and processable at ambient temperature, a roll-to-roll process could be utilized to print DSSCs on the mass production line. DSSCs perform better under lower light intensities, which makes them an excellent choice for indoor applications. Due to the advancement of molecular engineering, colored and transparent thin films have been introduced to enhance the aesthetic values. Up to now, such benefits have attracted considerable research interests and commercialization effort. Here, this review examines advanced techniques and research trends of this promising technology from the perspective of device modeling, state-of-art techniques, and novel device structures.

Quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) are a promising low-cost alternative to existing photovoltaic technologies such as crystalline silicon and thin inorganic films The absorption spectrum of quantum dots (QDs) can be tailored by controlling their size, and QDs can be produced by low-cost methods Nanostructures such as mesoporous films, nanorods, nanowires, nanotubes and nanosheets with high microscopic surface area, redox electrolytes and solid-state hole conductors are borrowed from standard dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) to fabricate electron conductor/QD monolayer/hole conductor junctions with high optical absorbance Herein we focus on recent developments in the field of mono- and polydisperse QDSCs Stability issues are adressed, coating methods are presented, performance is reviewed and special emphasis is given to the importance of energy-level alignment to increase the light to electric power conversion efficiency

Carbon black was employed as the catalyst for triiodide reduction on fluorine-doped tin oxide glass substrates (FTO-glass) used as counter electrodes in platinum-free dye-sensitized solar cells The fill factors were strongly dependent on the thickness of the carbon layer, and the light energy conversion efficiency also increased up to a thickness of 10 μm The charge-transfer resistance (R ct ) of the carbon counter electrode decreased with the thickness of the carbon layer The R ct for the thicker carbon layer is less than three times that for the platinized FTO-glass The highest cell efficiency was 91% under 100 mW cm -2 light intensity (1 sun AM 15 light, J sc = 168 mA cm -2 , V oc = 7898 mV, fill factor = 0685)

Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Based on Carbon Black Counter Electrodes

The power conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells crucially depends on the ability of the sensitizer to absorb light in a broad range of the solar spectrum. In order to increase this range of absorption, a tandem structure with two different sensitizer dyes in two different compartments of the cell, respectively, was realized. Overall power conversion efficiencies as high as η=10.5% and short circuit current densities of JSC=21.1 mA/cm2 were achieved under air mass 1.5 illumination with red dye and black dye in the upper and lower compartment of the cell, respectively.
