Evaluation of antioxidant and anticancer potential of Cassia tora leaves

Genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying mangrove adaptations to intertidal environments

Biosynthesis of metal nanoparticles presents a promising approach for their efficient and environmentally friendly production. In this study, CuO nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by using Rumex nepalensis Spreng. as a bio-reducing agent. The spectroscopic analysis confirmed the crystalline monoclinic structure of the synthesized CuO NPs, with particle sizes ranging from 21 to 97 nm. These biosynthesized CuO NPs exhibited notable antimicrobial activity against diverse microorganisms, suggesting their potential for antimicrobial applications. Moreover, the CuO NPs displayed significant antioxidant activity, demonstrated by their effective scavenging of 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals. This study highlights the straightforward, cost-effective, non-toxic, and robust nature of CuO NPs synthesis using Rumex nepalensis Spreng., offering insights into their potential applications in antimicrobial and antioxidant fields.

Biosynthesis of CuO Nanoparticles Using Plant Extract as a Precursor: Characterization, Antibacterial, and Antioxidant Activity

Aims: Evaluation of cytotoxic potential on the leaves and stem bark extracts of 15 mangrove plants grown in Sri Lanka on breast cancer (MCF -7) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells. Place and Duration of Study: At the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Colombo between 1 of February 2014 to April 2015. Methodology: Leaves and stem barks of 15 mangrove plants were extracted with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol. Resulting extracts were screened for cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 and HepG2 cells using the Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. Original Research Article Samarakoon et al.; EJMP, 14(4): 1-11, 2016; Article no.EJMP.26107 2 Results: Phoenix paludosa, Avicennia officinalis and Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea showed highest cytotoxic properties on cancer cells. Chloroform extract of stem bark of S. hydrophyllacea, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of leaves), hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of leaves of Aegiceras corniculatum, methanol extracts of leaves and stem bark of Nypa fruticans and Rhizophora mucronata, methanol extract of stem bark of Sonneratia alba and Rhizophora apiculata and methanol extract of bark of A. officinalis exerted selective cytotoxicity to HepG2 cells. The hexane extract of leaves of B. gymnorrhiza, chloroform extract of leaves of N. fruticans, ethyl acetate extract of stem bark of Lumnitzera littorea, chloroform extract of leaves of Rhizophora apiculata and chloroform extract of leaves of Pemphis acidula showed selective cytotoxic effects against MCF-7 cells. Out of the 116 mangrove extracts tested, 82 extracts showed no significant cytotoxic effects (IC50>100 μg/mL) against MCF 7 or HepG2 cells. Conclusion: The cytotoxic activities demonstrated by some of the solvent extracts of some mangrove plants provide scientific evidence for their therapeutic potentials and further studies are needed to identify active compounds responsible for cytotoxic effects.

Antinociceptive and Antioxidant Activities of the Ethanolic Extract of Excoecaria indica

Benalu batu (B. medicinalis) is a plant endemic to Central Sulawesi that has been reported to possess anticancer, antioxidant, and antiviral activities. The mechanism of action of these activities is still unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the immunostimulatory effect of ethanol extract of B. medicinalis on an in vivo model by measuring the macrophage phagocytotic activity and cytokine production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) on male mice and rats, respectively. The extract was obtained by the maceration method for 3 × 24 h using 70% ethanol. The doses of the extract were 60, 120, and 240 mg/kg body weight (bw). The percentage of macrophage phagocytosis and the TNF-α, and IFN-γ levels were measured on the eighth day, one hour after intraperitoneal injection of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The result showed that ethanol extract of B. medicinalis activated macrophage phagocytosis in a dose-dependent manner, with a significant increase in cytokine expression of TNF-α and IFN-γ. The optimal dose was 240 mg/kg bw, with a higher percentage of phagocytic activity and higher levels of TNF-α and IFN-γ than Stimuno® as a positive control and other dosage treatments. This study suggests that B. medicinalis ethanol extract has the effect of an immunomodulator and provides a scientific basis for traditional usage of this herb plant.
