This paper proposes a new controlling technique of asynchronous sigma delta modulation with characteristic of one-cycle response. This technique can reject power source perturbations in one cycle period and reduce the peaks of harmonic with one side random hysteresis technique. The proposed method was analyzed, designed, and experimented in a full bridge inverter. The distortion of output voltage and the harmonic peaks were used to measure the performance of the proposed technique. The experimental results show that the proposed technique can reduce the peak of harmonic up to 0.42 p.u and the harmonic distortion 5.9% at the ripple of 20% of power source when comparing with convention asynchronous sigma delta modulation.

One-Cycle Control and Random Hysteresis in Asynchronous Sigma-Delta Modulation

Hysteretic comparator (Schmitt trigger) is the basic part of the asynchronous sigma-delta modulator (ASDM). If propagation delay of a hysteretic comparator is not equal to zero and it has measurable value, than it affects the ASDM output frequency spectrum. As ASDM is a circuit with serial connection of an integrator and a hysteretic comparator followed by a negative feedback loop, propagation delay of the comparator will introduce the timing errors in ASDM output signal-triggering events. Therefore ASDM central frequency will be lower then it is in the case for propagation delay equal to zero. This study provides mathematical analysis of the hysteretic comparator propagation delay influence to the ASDM output frequency spectrum. The method for ASDM central frequency improvement using integrator voltage clamping has been proposed. Mathematical analysis, together with simulation and measurement results, shows partial central frequency increment. As ASDM circuit can be used as an oscillator for zero-input signals, central frequency improvement can be significant.

This brief provides the mathematical analysis of the Schmitt-trigger propagation-delay influence on the asynchronous sigma-delta modulator (ASDM) output-signal frequency spectrum. Beside the propagation delay, the Schmitt-trigger slew-rate impact has been also presented. Based on the mathematical analysis, a method for the Schmitt-trigger propagation-delay compensation has been proposed. The method is implemented by introducing hysteresis-level modulation. The first-order ASDM simulation and measurement models have been proposed for the propagation-delay influence to the ASDM output-signal frequency and for the compensation method verification. The measurement and simulation results for the proposed method confirm the ASDM output frequency spectrum improvement.

A Method for the Schmitt-Trigger Propagation-Delay Compensation in Asynchronous Sigma–Delta Modulator

This paper proposes to suppress the harmonic spikes in asynchronous sigma delta modulation by randomizing the hysteresis window for the distribution of the switching frequency and harmonic spectrum. The proposed scheme was examined in the dc/dc buck converter. The experimental results show that the proposed technique provides improved performance in terms of low peaks of harmonic while maintaining low output voltage ripple.
