Fresh and well preserved specimens are a must in anatomy teaching. Plastination has emerged as a ray of hope for near ideal preservation of biological specimens. The study was conducted using fresh specimen of trachea and lungs of sheep obtained from the slaughter house to study the tracheobronchial tree using luminal plastination. On examination the plastinated specimen of sheep tracheobronchial tree shows trachea with its cartilaginous markings, division of trachea into principle bronchi, lobar bronchi, segmental bronchi upto the alveoli.Theplastinated specimen was near ideal and are excellent for teaching gross anatomy, neuroanatomy and radiology. Hence,these specimens can be used as a better teaching aid in schools, colleges and research institutes.

A Study of Tracheobronchial Tree Using Luminal Cast Plastination

In medical terms, cast refers to the replica obtained after filling a luminal structure with resin to reproduce its morphology. It can be accomplished by removing the soft tissue around it, termed corrosion or maceration. Corrosion casts form very important material in learning morphology of various structures like- vascular tree, tracheobronchial tree, luminal casts of various organs. Vascular casts have been studied using scanning electron microscopy, which has contributed to understanding the biological processes. If the specimen is fixed after resin injection, it can be used for surgical training, medical teaching etc. In the present review, the authors have tried to analyse the technical aspects of corrosion casting. We have also added note on polyurethane foam cast of coronary vessels, which was carried out in our laboratory.

Corrosion Cast- Comparison of Different Techniques and Materials Used in Corrosion Casting

A technique to demonstrate the arterial supply of the female reproductive organs of the African lion (Panthera leo) is described. A 122 kg, one year old nulliparous lioness was used. A tin-condensation based, room temperature vulcanization silicone with a durometer shore 30 A hardness silicone, coloured with red pigment was used to fill the reproductive arterial supply in situ via the abdominal aorta. After the silicone polymer-mix cured, the organs were removed and macerated yielding a flexible arterial cast of the female reproductive organs. The cast endured handling well and showed good flexibility. In situ casting has the advantage of minimal leakage since no vessels are cut in the system to be studied.

Medical students studying human gross anatomy often have difficulty conceptualizing the internal three-dimensional structure of organs and the pattern of distribution of blood vessels. Students are further challenged with comprehending the orientation and spatial relationship different organs have to one another as they function as integral parts of systems. Although tracheobronchial and heart casts of animals have been produced and have proven to be valuable tools in veterinary medical education (Henry, et al., 1992, 1998), few efforts have been made to develop physical models of these internal structures in humans for use in medical education. In this work, colored silicone casts of a human heart, tracheobronchial tree, and brain ventricles were made from unembalmed organs. Major vessels were cannulated and appropriately colored silicone was injected. Specimens were macerated to yield resilient, anatomically exact replica of the internal architecture such as cardiac chambers, lung vessels and airways, and the brain ventricular system.
