The pressure dependence of Raman spectra of AsI 3 single crystals has been studied under hydrostatic pressure up to 2.23 GPa at 77 K by using a diamond anvil cell. The number of Raman lines increased abruptly at a pressure of 1.66 GPa indicating a structural phase transition. Further analysis of the Raman spectra in the high-pressure phase suggests that the new unit cell is made of two nearly identical unit cells of the low-pressure phase.

Grinding and the anisotropic environment: Influences on the diastereoselective formation of Group 15 allyl complexes

Raman scattering from BiI 3 and SbI 3 crystals has been studied at atmospheric and hydrostatic pressures up to 2 GPa. From the polarization characteristics, mode assignments were made for both crystals. The Raman shifts monotonically increased with pressure for all modes in BiI 3 . Although both crystals belong to the same space symmetry group, the pressure coefficients in SbI 3 were significantly different from those in BiI 3 . For a few modes, the coefficients gradually changed near P 1 = (0.30 ± 0.1) GPa, some of which were negative; also, near P 2 = (0.9 ± 0.1) GPa, the pressure coefficients of all modes changed. Above P 2 , all modes in SbI 3 had positive pressure coefficients as they have in BiI 3 . Furthermore, deformation-type stacking faults appear in SbI 3 only above P 2 , although it is known that these faults can form at all pressures in BiI 3 . By comparing this unusual behavior of the Raman lines in SbI 3 around P 2 with the results in BiI 3 and comparing the two lattice structures, we suggest that the type of bonding in SbI 3 changes to become more ionic and hence more similar to the bonding in BiI 3 . This change in structure is supported by a change in the slope of the absorption-edge photon energy versus pressure.

Raman Scattering under Hydrostatic Pressures in Layered BiI3 and SbI3 Crystals

Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials and their van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are promising candidates for highly efficient renewable energy application. On the basis of density functional theory, we investigated systematically the structure, stability, and electronic and optical properties of the group-VA trihalides AI3 (A = As, Sb) single layers and their vdW heterostructure. Our results suggest that the AI3 (A = As, Sb) single layers can be exfoliated from their bulk crystal easily and are also dynamically stable. Standard PBE predicts that the band gap of AI3 increases with element number of A, which is in conflict with the experimental results of the bulk. This unreasonable trend can be corrected when the spin–orbit coupling (SOC) effect is considered. Raman scattering from BiI3 and SbI3 crystals has been studied at hydrostatic pressures up to 2 GPa. The wavenumbers monotonically increased with pressure for all modes in BiI3. Although both crystals belong to the same space group, the pressure coefficients of SbI3 were significantly different from those of BiI3. At pressure P0 = 0.92 ± 0.01 GPa, the pressure coefficients of all modes changed. Above P0, all modes in SbI3 had positive pressure coefficients as they have in BiI3. By comparing this unusual behavior of the Raman lines in SbI3 around P0 with the results in BiI3 and comparing the two lattice structures, we suggest that the type of bonding of SbI3 changes to become more ionic and hence more similar to the bonding of BiI3. This change in structure is supported by changes in the bandwidth of the self-trapped exciton (STE) luminescence and the slope of the absorption edge photon energy versus pressure. Raman scattering, luminescence, and absorption edge under hydrostatic pressures of layered BiI3 and SbI3

Raman spectra of the layered compound, AsI3, are reported for samples at ambient temperature and at pressures up to 8 GPa. Changes in the number of peaks, their frequencies, relative intensities and spectral widths as a function of pressure are briefly described, and evidence for a possible crystallographic phase transition near 1.6 GPa is presented. The two As-I stretching frequencies initially decrease with increasing pressure, as a result of charge-transfer effects, but above 4.5 GPa show the more typical increase with pressure exhibited by all other normal modes.
