Many agricultural fields that have received long-term applications of phosphorus (P) often contain levels of P exceeding those required for optimal crop production. Knowledge of the effect of the P remaining in the soil (residual effect) is of great importance for fertilization management. Plant P availability of residual P in soils is usually estimated using successive cropping experiments carried out in field or greenhouse studies. As this approach is very expensive and time consuming, more rapid soil test methods that can approximate this biological measure are required. The objective of this paper was to use a different approach to evaluate P availability (desorption) over a long period of time instead of the classical means of extraction. Long-Term Phosphorus Desorption Using Dialysis Membrane Tubes Filled with Iron Hydroxide and its Effect on Phosphorus Pools

Many agricultural fields that have received long-term applications of P often contain levels of P exceeding those required for optimal crop production. Knowledge of the effect of the P remaining in the soil (residual effect) is of great importance for fertilization management. In order to characterize P forms in soils, a wide variety of methods have been proposed. The use of dialysis membrane tubes filled with hydrous ferric oxide (DMT-HFO) has recently been reported as an effective way to characterize P desorption over a long-term in laboratoty studies. However, there is little information on the relationship between kinetics of P release using this new method and plant P uptake. This method consist of a procedure of shaking a sample for a long period of time there by exploiting the whole volume of the soil which is in contrast to the actual plant mode of uptake. This method has also practical limitations in employing it for a routine soil analysis, as it is very expensive and time consuming. The objectives of this study were (i) to study the changes in labile, non-labile and residual P using successive P desorption by DMT-HFO followed by a subsequent fractionation method (combined method) (ii) to assess how the information gained from P desorption kinetic data relates to plant growth at green house and field trials

Characterizing phosphate desorption kinetics from soil : an approach to predicting plant available phosphorus

Little is known about the phosphorus (P) status of non agricultural soils, although some sites in drylands are potentially important for the production of desert truffles, a mycorrhizal association that may overcome the fertility deficiency. In this work we described the fertility characteristics with special emphasis on the P status of some natural desert truffle stands. The soils have poor fertility characteristics and the total P contents range from 32 to 273 mg Kg‐1. The P fractionation shows fairly variable amounts of organic P, while the proportions of the other fractions are related to the soil chemical properties. The available P contents are also variable, but generally high if compared with the critical levels for optimal yields of crops. The water availability of these soils is likely to be an important factor to be kept into account when evaluating the P availability.

Phosphorus status in some natural desert truffle stands

Flood irrigated date-palm orchards annually manured for 10 (=U 10 ), 50 (=U 50 ), 110 (= U 110 ) and 230 (U230) years together with a barren site in a nearby desert (= U 0 ), all on sandy soils, were analysed for total P (TP), organic P (OP), inorganic P extracted by 0.5 M H2SO4 (Ca-P), inorganic P not extracted by 0.5 M H2SO4 (NP), total N (TN) and organic C (TC). Watering resulted in continuing CaCO 3 accumulation in the soils. TC and TN to 160 cm depth increased rapidly over the first 50 years (120 g C m -2 a -1 and 9.7 g N m -2 a -1 ), then the increases slowed. In contrast, TP continued to accumulate steadily (4.8 g P m -2 a -1 ). At U 0 , TP to 160 cm depth was very small (= 88 mg kg -1 ) and dominated by Ca-P with OP as a minor component. At U 10 , OP and Ca-P were in equal proportions. The latter acquired increasing dominance with increasing period of treatment whereas OP reached a steady state. NP increased at a rate which decreased with time. It is likely that most of OP compounds have been leached down the profile where mineralization and subsequent immobilizations, probabaly by Ca 2+ ions from irrigation waters, have occurred.
