High Temperature Coatings

The structural materials are essential for the present important advancements in economics, for reliability, safety, sustainability, etc., over presently operating reactor technologies of Generation IV reactors, advanced fast reactor core and fusion reactors. In order to avoid the release of radioactive fission products in the environment, the consistency of the cladding tube is necessary. Thus, increasing the operating temperature of these steels by oxide dispersion strengthening (ODS) makes them promising candidate materials. For the present study, the samples were prepared from the 430 L pre-alloyed powder using mechanical alloying through vacuum hot pressing. The hot-pressed alloys A, B, and C structural changes were examined through transmission electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS) analysis and the mechanical properties, such as sintered density(g/cc), Vickers hardness (HV), compressive strength (650 degrees C), and elongation (%) were measured. The corrosion resistance was measured through an electrochemical corrosion test of the alloys A, B, and C. From the TEM-EDS analysis, it was observed that the nano oxide particles and complex oxides particles were uniformly distributed. Alloy A has a higher compressive strength of 1307 MPa when compared to alloy Band alloy C. Moreover, alloy Chas higher corrosion resistance was observed than alloys A& B.

Corrosion and High Temperature Compressive Strength Behaviour of 17cr Ferritic ODS Steel with Addition of Aluminium Through Vacuum Hot Pressing

Four different composition of FeCrAlTiY-x MCrAlY (M = Co and Ni, x = 0, 10, 20, and 30 in mass %) coatings were prepared onto carbon steel substrate using a flame spray technique. The high temperature oxidation resistance of the coating and uncoated samples was studied cyclically at 700°C for 8 times. X‑ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDX) were used to investigate the phase composition and morphologies of the coating before and after oxidation. Depending on the coating composition, the coatings are composed of FeCr, Fe(Cr,Al)2O4, (Co,Ni)Cr2O4 and FeO. After high temperature oxidation test, it was found that the carbon steel experienced high oxidation rate at the aforesaid temperature, forming a thick Fe-oxides layer. Even if a protective Al2O3 or Cr2O3 layer is not formed on the coating surface, the flame sprayed FeCrAlTiY–MCrAlY coatings effectively improve the resistance of carbon steel toward oxidation at high temperature due to the formation of Fe2O3 and spinel oxides. According to the results, the 30 mass % MCrAlY coating exhibited a lowest mass gain after exposure at 700°C for 8 cycles.

Microstructure and oxidation resistance of spark plasma sintered Yttria-Zirconia ODS steels

Mechanical properties of material are largely dictated by constituent microstructure parameters such as dislocation density, lattice microstrain, crystallite size and its distribution. To develop ultra-fine grain alloys such as Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) alloys, mechanical alloying is crucial step to introduce crystal defects, and refining the crystallite size. In this research the ODS sample powders were mechanically alloyed with different Y2O3 concentration respectively of 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 wt%. MA process was conducted with High Energy Milling (HEM) with the ball to powder ratio of 15:1. The vial and the ball were made of alumina, and the milling condition is set 200 r.p.m constant. The ODS powders were investigated by X-Ray Diffractions (XRD), Bragg-Brentano setup of SmartLab Rigaku with 40 KV, and 30 mA, step size using 0.02°, with scanning speed of 4°min-1. Line Profile Analysis (LPA) of classical Williamson-Hall was carried out, with the aim to investigate the different crystallite size, and microstrain due to the selection of the full wide at half maximum (FWHM) and integral breadth.

Line profile analysis of ODS steels Fe20Cr5AlTiY milled powders at different Y2O3 concentrations

In the present study, the Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) steels were synthesized by adding various concentration of Y2O3 (0, 0.25, 0.35 and 1 wt. %) into 410S steel. The sample preparation was carried out using a powder metallurgy technique. The steel-Y2O3 powders were wet mechanically alloyed for 3 h, dried and then compacted into green body. The samples were sintered in a vacuum furnace at elevated temperatures of 1000 °C and 1100 °C for 3 h. The phase analysis and structural characterization were carried out by XRD and SEM-EDX, respectively. The bulk density and hardness of the samples were measured using Archimedes principle and Vickers hardness tester, respectively. According to the results of metallographic characterization, ODS steels are composed mainly by (Fe,Cr) phase. The SEM observations indicate the presence of precipitates in the sintered steels. The density and hardness of the sample sintered at 1000 and 1100 °C increase with the increase of Y2O3 concentration. At 1100 °C, however, the density and hardness of ODS steel containing 1 wt. % Y2O3 have a tendency to decrease due to the formation of a compound consisting of Fe, Cr, Mn, Si and O.
