Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is a widely consumed fruit in tropical/subtropical regions around the world due to its excellent flavor and taste, and valuable source of nutrients and phytochemical compounds. As a climacteric fruit, mango is easily perishable after harvesting due to the ripening process, environmental conditions, and improper postharvest handling, leading to significant quality losses as well as economic loss throughout a supply chain. Postharvest losses are attributed to harvesting at an improper maturity stage, poor postharvest pretreatment, improper packing and packaging, inappropriate storage temperature and distribution conditions. These caused mechanical damage, sap burn, spongy tissue, weight loss, fruit softening, decay, chilling injury, and postharvest diseases. Currently, each step in the supply chain has been applied many postharvest technologies to reduce the quality losses of mango fruits as well as improving their marketability with the highest retention of quality. This review documented available possible causes for the quality losses and observed the physicochemical changes of mango fruit when applying postharvest technologies at each critical step in the mango supply chain from harvesting, pre-treatment, packaging, storage, to distribution. The summarized information is expected to provide comprehensive quality changes of mango fruits and point out the proper technology at each step of the supply chain.

Supply Chain Management of Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Fruit: A Review With a Focus on Product Quality During Postharvest

One of the most popular commercial varieties of mango in India is the Alphonso variety. Due to its limited and specialised production zone, this cultivar attracts interest for its supply chain management research. Only a few studies on the management of the mango supply chain in India could be discovered in the literature. In order to better understand supply chain management and pre- and post-harvest losses for the Alphonso mango, a survey was conducted. To acquire the data, 123 observations from farmers, FPOs, retailers, exporters, and government officials were recorded. A socioeconomic study revealed that farmers who were young and educated (less than 50 years old and graduates) produced mangoes of higher quality and were more committed to exporting mangoes.The findings indicate that preharvest losses are primarily caused by variables including climate change, global warming, numerous illnesses and pests, spongy tissue, and fruit fly problem. During the harvest season, spongy tissue and abrupt, unseasonal rain have a negative impact on mango quality and supply. Mechanical damage, storage conditions, transportation, and mango handling all had a major impact on postharvest losses.According to the study, pre-harvest factors were responsible for 30 to 40% of mango loss, and post-harvest handling was found to be responsible for 15 to 20% of mango loss. The revenue of farmers is remains poor due to the current trading channels and lack of facilities for value addition.The results of this study provide insight on the current state of the supply chain and Alphonso mango losses. Researchers, governmental organisations, and policymakers can benefit from this study's findings by taking the appropriate actions to boost farmers' incomes, balance the market's supply and demand, and lower losses in other perishable fruits.

Mapping of supply chain and assessment of pre and postharvest losses of Alphonso mango in India

Mango (Mangifera indica) is an economically and nutritionally significant fruit crop in the tropical and subtropical regions. The demand for mango fruits and processed products has been high both in the internal and external markets due to its taste and its associated health benefits. In meeting the demands requirement, reengineering the various tools that are available to improve mango production in response to the varied stresses in their environment, especially in the era of climate change, is crucial. The prime goal is to demonstrate the effects of climate change on mango growth, yield and quality while showing interventions that have been deployed to combat it. The chapter focuses on the role climate variability plays in the growth and yield parameters of mango trees, as well as the improvement objectives and approaches employed in enhancing their production and quality. It offers the diverse progress made in overcoming the biotic stresses that hinder mango production as well as the intervention made in improving the nutritional and quality traits of mangoes while offering directions for future research works on mango trees.

Increasing Mango Production Efficiency under the Fast-Changing Climate

Influence of evaporative coolant structures on the postharvest attributes of climacteric fruits

Mango, the king of fruits, is one of the most important fruit crops of Pakistan. In the country, Sammar Bahisht Chaunsa is a major cultivar grown for domestic consumption as well as exporting to international markets; however, the cultivar has a strong disorder of biennial bearing. The main cause of the disorder is lack of immediate, sufficient and vigorous postharvest vegetative growth, which is essential for next year flowering/fruiting. The current study was designed to overcome this fruiting pattern by inducing postharvest vegetative growth immediately after fruit harvesting as this growth is must required for flowering. The trial was conducted in the experimental orchard of Mango Research Station, Shujabad on 25 years old trees of cultivar Sammar Bahisht Chaunsa, planted at 12m apart rows and plants. The experiment was performed during 2015-2020. One level of urea (2%) and two levels of KNO3 (1 % and 2%) alone and in various combinations were applied to mango trees immediately after the fruit harvesting to study their effects on the induction of vegetative growth. It was found that KNO3 at 1% ensured the maximum postharvest growth (67.11%) with maximum flowering (39.49%), and fruit yield (241 kg/plant). However nonsignificant difference (25 to 26 OBRIX) in total soluble solids (TSS) and titratable acidity (TA) was noted(0.7 to 0.9%) in all the treatments. It was concluded that application of KNO3 twice at 10 days interval alone or in combination with urea 2% after the harvesting of fruits was found beneficial for getting proper postharvest growth in mango trees to support subsequent fruit crop. 

Induction of vegetative growth after harvesting of fruits in mango cv. sammar bahisht chaunsa by using different chemicals

Pakistan is one of the major mango-producing and -exporting countries in the world. During 2007-15, significant postharvest research and development (R&D) work was conducted under the Australian-funded ASLP mango supply chain management/value chain improvement projects (two phases). The project started by laying a postharvest foundation R&D infrastructure in 2007. Fruit quality losses in supply chains were documented. Protocols were developed for maturity testing, de-sapping, storage/sea-freighting, and ripening and postharvest disease management of major mango cultivars. Quantity loss (unmarketable fruit) was around 20% while quality loss (affecting price) was 65 and 70% in Sindhri and Samar Bahisht Chaunsa mango, respectively. Sap burn and postharvest diseases were the most important fruit quality issues at retail. Cultivars differed in terms of fruit harvest maturity indicators, postharvest treatment response, controlled atmosphere conditions and temperatures for storage and ripening. Besides physical de-sapping (on racks), lime wash (de-stemming and dipping fruit in 0.5% lime solution for 2-3 min) was also found to be effective, with morning being the best time for fruit picking. Significant relationships of production locality, orchard management, nutrition (Ca, B and K) and pre-cooling were found with postharvest disease incidence. Postharvest hot-water fungicidal dip of Scholar (active ingredient (a.i.) fludioxonil), Amistar (a.i. azoxystrobin) and Sportak (a.i. procholaz) gave significant fruit disease control. An integrated approach of good production practices, right maturity, correct postharvest fungicidal treatments and pre-cooling was an effective strategy for reducing disease incidence and maintaining better shelf-life at retail. On the basis of R&D and interventions, significant improvement was brought to the local mango industry and export. Sindhri mangoes were sea-freighted commercially to the EU and UK with good fruit quality outturn and overall postharvest life of 40-45 days.

Mango value chain improvement through postharvest research and development: a developing country case study

Emerging high-end fruit markets and retailers have been setting out the new trends of fruit marketing in Pakistan. Market research studies conducted at high-end fruit outlets in the three big cities of Pakistan, Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad, in the Australia-Pakistan Agriculture Sector Linkage Program (ASLP) project indicated that consumers are willing to pay 20-25% more for good quality mango – defined as “medium size (300-400 g), clean, fully ripe fruit without softness and good in color without blemishes”. However, the traditional marketing systems that exist in Pakistan are dominated by commission agents/contractors that inhibit price transparency, and this impact on the producers' abilities to respond to consumer needs. Three marketing interventions were carried out to demonstrate the benefits of ASLP best practices, documented at the farm level, along the identified chain. In the first trial, the ASLP best practice mangoes were presented to the market through the traditional wholesale market system, which failed due to reluctant behavior of middlemen. However, the second trial adopted a direct marketing approach (producer to exclusive outlet established by the project team) that showed the grower could earn 30% more profit than on traditional mangoes. This outcome was replicated in another trial involving growers, traders and high-end market retailers and a net return of USD 0.30 kg for growers was obtained. Similarly, traders also received a net return USD 0.046 kg while selling to high-end supermarket chains and earned USD 4.46 kg when selling to corporate customers. Retailers earned 20% more margin on ASLP 'best practice' mangoes. These results confirm that all chain participants can benefit from a commitment along the chain provided they have the desired resources, skills and an effective communication system supported by the relevant Government departments.
