Dry matter intake, nutrient digestibility and some rumen and blood metabolites were investigated in goats fed five diets composed of cassava peel and brewer's dried grains (BDG) in the ratios of approximately 82:8, 69:20, 57:33, 44:45 and 32:58. Urea and molasses were included in each diet at 2% and 7.5% respectively and the crude protein levels of the diets were approximately 8%, 11%, 14%, 17% and 20%. There were no significant (P > 0.05) differences in Dry matter and Organic matter intake but N intake Increased up to Diet 4. There were dietary effects on the digestibility of DM, N, crude fibre, acid detergent fibre, either extract, nitrogen free extract and energy but not 0M. The highest digestibility values were obtained on diet 4 for most of the nutrients. The concentrations of rumen ammonia and blood plasma urea increased from Diet 1 to Diet 5. There were significant (P < 0.05) dietary effect on rumen fluid ph. Rumen protozoal count increased from Diet 1 to Diet 5. The depression in digestibility of Diet 5 would indicate that BDG should not be included at up to 58% in the diet of goats.

Cassava peel meal (CPM), Brewer’s spent grain, (BSG) and Panicum maximum (basal diet) were fed to West African dwarf bucks to determine the carcass characteristics and economy of production. Diet A, the control was 52% maize-based diet. Diet B was 25% CPM and 75%BSG), Diet C consists of 50% CPM and 50%BSG while Diet D is made up of 75%CPM and 25% BSG. The bucks were fed for 56 days. Diet C produced the highest warm carcass weight which was significantly higher Pp 0.05). The cost of production per kilogram weight (kg) showed that bucks placed on diet C had the least cost (N262.38) with cost reduction of 84.60%, while those on diet A had the highest cost (N1,637). The outstanding results of bucks on diet C indicated that the inclusion of same quantities of cassava peel and brewer’s spent grain in West African Dwarf bucks could be a diet of choice for fattening the bucks for more meat production at a lower economic rate because of the cheaper cost of cassava peel and brewers spent grain.Keywords: Brewer’s spent grain (BSG), Carcass characteristics, Cassava peels, Panicum maximum, West African dwarf goat

Effect of replacing brewer’s spent grain with cassava peel meal on carcass and economy of West African dwarf bucks fed Panicum maximum basal diet

This study was carried out to evaluate the performance of West African dwarf goats fed agroindustrial by-products (cassava peels, dried poultry waste, molasses and saw dust ash) based diets. The study lasted for 120 days during which diets formulated with 0% (1), 20% (2), 25% (3) and 30% (4) dried poultry waste (DPW) replaced cassava peels meal (CPM) in the same proportion. The diets were fed as a supplement to Pennisetum purpureum hay (basal). The goats were arranged in a completely randomized design. Parameters included feed intake, digestibility, nitrogen utilization, and growth rate were studied. The dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) intakes (glkgW0.75/ day) were not significantly (p< 0.05) different among treatment means. Animals placed on diet 1 (control) had values of 115.51gW0.75/day and 20.99gW0.75 /day for DM and CP intakes respectively. The digestibility of diet 3 (67.35, 80.77, 70.32, 72.89, 72.69, 74.58 and 59.98%) DM, CP, EE, CF, ADF, NDF, ADL and NFE respectively compared favourably with diet 1. The nitrogen retention was highest in diet 3 (75.7%).The live weight gain (g / day) was highest in animals fed diet 1 and that on diet 3. There were significant (p < 0.05) differences in feed conversion ratio and the cost per kilogram live weight gain was highest in diet 4 with 30 % DPW inclusion. It was therefore concluded that feeding of diet 3 (25% DPW) could lead to improved feed intake, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen utilization and weight gain in WAD goats.Keywords: Agro-industrial by-products, digestibility, nitrogen utilization, WAD goats
