This invention discloses a system and method for inspecting objects, the method includes creating a reference image for a representative object, the reference image comprising an at least partially vectorized first representation of boundaries within the image, acquiring an image of an object under inspection comprising a second representation of boundaries within the image, and comparing the second representation of boundaries to said at least partially vectorized first representation of boundaries, thereby to identify defects. A method and system for image processing in a software environment, the method including providing to a software based image processor a combination of user defined regions and defect triggers received from a hardware processor, and inspecting each of the user defined regions and regions surrounding hardware defect triggers each with a dynamically chosen set of inspection algorithms is also disclosed.

Apparatus and methods for the inspection of objects

This paper presents a method for analyzing the operating performance of a circuit breaker through the trip/close coil current signature. A time-domain based approach is used to detect the critical points in the coil current, which can be used by an intelligent system, human, or machine, to assess and predict the health of the breaker. The proposed algorithm is computationally inexpensive and can be easily embedded in a low cost microprocessor. Experimental data were used to verify the robustness of the algorithm. The method provides a practical extremum detection technique in a noisy environment, which can be extended for other digital signal processing applications in computer science and biomedical engineering.

A solution for representing a free-form shape in a data-processing system is proposed. An illustrative method comprises associating sample points defining the free-form shape with a set of circular elements, and storing an indication of the circular elements. Associating includes determining a set of pivot points among the sample points in correspondence of maximum and minimum curvatures of the free-form shape, partitioning the sample points into a set of first groups of sample points each spanning around a corresponding pivot point and a set of second groups of sample points each extending according to a predefined minimum extent between a corresponding pair of adjacent first groups of sample points. Each first group is associated with a first circular element fitting the first group of sample points, and each second group is associated with at least one second circular element providing a predefined continuity with each adjacent first circular element.

Segmentation of free-form shapes into chains of circular elements in computer graphics applications

A method of finding critical (or corner) points and describing a two-dimensional closed boundary is presented. The method uses a split-and-merge technique. It first splits a closed boundary in half until the boundary is approximated by a line within a given error bound to find critical points and all the control points are linked by lines, that is, linearly approximated. Next, by finding some breaking points which have sharp angles between three critical points, a closed boundary is divided by some intervals. Within each interval, a merging technique based on an LMS (least-mean-square) error is used to reduce the number of critical points and segments. Then, each shape is represented by an ordered sequence of line segments and circular arc segments with control points as vertex points. The resulting description is a good approximation of the original in the sense that it makes interesting points explicit and achieves significant data compression. >

A boundary curve is represented by circular arcs and lines to obtain explicit geometrical features. Corner points, which are local extremum points, are detected by the symmetry property of the points. An inflection point is a zero-crossing point between two neighboring extremum points. In the LMS (least-mean-square) sense, a circular arc between two neighboring significant points is optimized. The similarity of neighboring segments is checked in radius and center, and the segments are merged when the difference is negligible. The representation result obtained here is a good approximation of the original curve, in the sense that it makes critical points explicit and achieves error-minimized representation. >

Significant point detection and boundary representation with lines and circular arcs, using a scanning box method

This paper presents some simulation results of our study of an output-buffered ATM service multiplexer (ATM-SMX) in the North Carolina Information Highway WAN. There are three types of traffic input to the multiplexer: 1) bursty; 2) continuous-bit-rate (CBR); and 3) variable-bit-rate (VBR) traffic. These mixed sources contend for transmission on the high-speed output link of the multiplexer. In our simulator, there are N/sub s/ identical bursty sources each modelled as a Markov modulated Bernoulli process (MMBP); a number (N/sub C/) of CBR sources modelled as periodic arrivals with constant packet length; and VBR sources represented by N/sub V/ periodic arrivals where the number of ATM cells per frame follows a negative binomial distribution. The influence of two queueing disciplines-priority-first-in-first-out (P-FIFO) and push-out and threshold (P & T) scheduling-are explored. Our results show how the delay and cell loss probability of the ATM-SMX are affected by the mixed traffic and two scheduling policies.
