Simple Summary The European hake is under fishing pressure, both in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean waters. Moreover, in certain geographic locations, its size-at-maturity has been reported to decline over time. Understanding biological processes in marine life can assist in species stock evaluation and future management, allowing for the avoidance of population decline and diversity loss. This work focuses on exploring the variation in European hake size-at-maturity in the eastern Ionian Sea (Central Mediterranean) during the last five decades, investigating, at the same time, its relationship with environmental change. Abstract European hake, Merluccius merluccius L. 1758, is a highly valuable demersal fish species exploited in both the east Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Changes in the size-at-maturity of this species have been reported in various geographic areas. Size-at-maturity is a key parameter in fishery management. Our main goal was to study the trend of the size-at-maturity of European hake in the eastern Ionian Sea (Central Mediterranean) over the last five decades. Utilizing a multi-decadal series of data for various environmental variables, we employed multivariate analyses and non-additive modeling in an attempt to identify shifts in the climatic environment of the eastern Ionian Sea and whether the maturation of the hake population could be affected by these changes. The analyses used suggest a plausible environmental regime shift in the study area in the late 1990s/early 2000s. The decrease in size-at-maturity that was detected in the last two decades may, thus, be associated with environmental changes. However, as many fish stocks already experience fishery-induced evolution, further investigation is necessary to determine whether this environmental effect is an additional stressor on a possibly already fishery-impacted population. The outcomes of this study highlight the importance of investigating the relationship between fish reproductive traits and altered environmental conditions, as the latter are generally ignored during assessments, affecting the robustness of fishery management.

Decline in Size-at-Maturity of European Hake in Relation to Environmental Regimes: A Case in the Eastern Ionian Sea

. In the present study we investigated the concentration of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the gills and muscles as well as the levels of Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), Catalase, GlutathioneS-Transferase (GST) and Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the liver and muscles of the bogue Boops boops (Linneaus,1758) fish that were caught in the bay of Oran (Algeria). For the purpose of evaluating the toxicological risk in the abovementioned area. The concentrations of total Dichlorodiphényltrichloroéthane (∑DDT) was present at highly significant levels (P˃0.001) compared to other OCPs, thus displayed in the following descending order: ∑DDTs > Lindane > Heptachlor. These OCPs had largely bioaccumulated in the gills compared to muscles. The PCA projection reported significant positive correlations between the concentrations of Lindane, DichloroDiphenyldichloroEthylene (DDE), DDD, DDT, and Heptachlor in gills and muscles. Seasonal variations of (OCPs) showed the highest average concentrations in the muscle and gills of fish collected mainly in Winter and Autumn (p < 0.001). The lowest concentrations were noted during the Spring and Summer periods. Significant negative correlations existed between the CAT, TBARS, GST and Lindane, ∑DDTs, and Heptachlor. The AChE (in liver and muscles) showed significant negative correlations with total DDT, with Correlation coefficient values R = - 0.67, R = - 0.64, respectively (significant R > 0.5). This study underlines that the bay of Oran suffers from chemical defilement.

To evaluate the potential human health risk to hake consumers, the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Zn) was measured in the edible tissues of hake Merluccius merluccius (Linnaeus, 1758) caught from Oran Bay on the western Algerian Mediterranean coast. Results revealed that the average metal concentrations varied significantly among sex and in target organs. The concentrations of metal accumulation take place preferentially in the liver compared to the muscle of hake species, with the highest levels found for Zn, followed by Pb and Cd. The Estimated daily intake (EDI) of each trace metal did not exceed the tolerable daily intake (TDI). Human health risk assessment from heavy metal exposure through fish consumption from Oran Bay for adults showed no significant non-carcinogenic adverse health risk since all calculated values for Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) and Total Target Hazard Quotient (TTHQ) were &amp;lt;1.

Fisheries and stock assessment of the European hake in GSA 04 zone (Algerian eastern coast) - tools for fisheries management and conservation

Northwest Africa (NWA) 8418 is an unusual chondrite whose properties do not exactly match those of any other known chondrite. It has similarities to the CV (Vigarano group), CK (Karoonda group), and CL (Loongana group) chondrites, but its abundance of large calcium‐aluminum‐rich inclusions (CAIs) and the low NiO content (<0.2 wt%) of its matrix olivine ally it most closely with the CV group. The absence of grossular, monticellite, wollastonite, and sodalite from the alteration products of the CAIs; the magnesium‐rich nature of the matrix olivines (Fa38) relative to that of the CV3 chondrites (~Fa50); and the presence of secondary Na‐bearing plagioclase and chlorapatite indicate a metamorphic temperature >600 °C. NWA 8418 contains kamacite, taenite, and troilite, and lacks magnetite and pentlandite. We propose that NWA 8418 be reclassified as a reduced CV4 chondrite, which makes it the first CV chondrite of petrologic type 4.

We have studied the European hake (Merluccius merluccius, Linnaeus, 1758) in Oran bay, obtained from fishermen coming to sell their catch at the local markets, in order to characterize the reproduction of this fish and to estimate the impact of local fishing on its population. Males are predominant in catches throughout most of the year, and, on average, males are smaller than females. Merluccius merluccius spawns in a partial manner, with asynchronous oocyte maturation, and breeds throughout the year. Determination of length at first sexual maturity (smaller for males) demonstrates earlier puberty in males compared to females. An essential item of information for achieving sustainable fishing is the demonstration that a large part (46%) of caught European hakes has a length below the length at first sexual maturity: they are juveniles. These juveniles are killed before being able to breed, which represents a danger for future fish stocks.
